This is my first post here. Yay! That is, if LJ decides to help me.
This was part of a huge post I upped last night on my journal. The whole thing is about tv shows I'm watching. Besides Supernatural I wrote something about Lost, Veronica Mars and Heroes. All are followed by a picspam, except for Heroes. So if you're intrested in seeing the rest, you can find it here: Tv Show Extravaganza! It's a huge post and it's not dial-up friendly.
I won't be singling out any episodes here. This will be why I love the show. I initially posted this in a Veronica Mars fan forum I help moderate, though I still haven't done any moderating. ;-) If anyone is interested, the forum is Veronica Mars Brasil, which was created by my friend
elektra_1000cia. The thing is, if you don't speak portuguese you won't understand anything there. I'm translating what I posted there because I think it was nice and I can't think of something original right now. I hope it makes sense and I hope you guys can understand what I mean.
I started watching Supernatural at Warner Channel, which is a cable tv channel around here. I saw most of the episodes from season 01. The thing is I watched them all out of order, because I watched it when I remembered or when I had the time. I like it and all, but I was not an addicted fanatic as I am now. Then during my summer vacation (december/january) I got the dvds at the video store and saw all episodes, marathon-style (back to back from beginning to end). When I saw Asylum I fell in love hard. And when I saw Faith I became totally addicted to it. I couldn't stop watching it anymore. And Faith is still one of my favorite episodes of the show.
I really like that it's a mythology show and that it has a whole story behind it: Dean and Sam's mom dying, the life the boys were led to live because of their father's obsession and all the other circumstances surrounding that, the yellow-eyed demon, the plans the demon has for Sam and how all this affects their whole lives.
The show has an amazing continuity and the fact that all the stories are based on urban legends and the like opens infinite possibilities for its development.
I love the structure of the show, the way we have one or several standalone episodes between mythology ones. Besides, even when the episodes are standalones we can clearly see how everything that has happened so far affects and modifies Dean and Sam. It was really nice seeing how they were becoming more and more complex throughout season 01 and it's nice to see that it's still happening.
I think Dean is an excellent character. Yeah, he usually does not open up about how he feels, he's sarcastic and tells a lot of jokes to try and look like a tough guy in control of the situation. But so far I think he is the most complex character of the show and I think that was evidenced by season 02. Maybe that's because he's the one who was always by his father's side. I really don't know. It's just something I feel. That said, Jensen Ackles is one hell of a (hot) actor. He can portray all of Dean's feelings in a very subtle way.
Forgetting about Dean/Jensen for a second, in the beginning I thought Sam was a bit too much on the emo side of things, but I've changed my mind as season 01 and now 02 progressed. I believe he is a complex character, but I think so far we've mainly seen one side of his personality. Things have changed a bit since the current season began (evil!Sam anyone?). There's one thing about him that bugs me though: everything seems to be black and white to him, there are no gray areas. But that has already started to change, so I'm good. I think Jared Padalecki is a great actor too. By the way, those guys have such great chemistry onscreen that it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing those two guys.
Now I'm saying something that I know quite a few people are going to disagree with. I even commented about this on some journals in my flist. I like Jo. Ok, maybe she's still a little uni-dimensional, but we've already seen some improvement there. In any case she needs to be in more episodes for the character to develop. I'm not against Dean/Jo. I think they can make an interesting couple in the future if that is not part of the main storyline. Yes, I think Sam and Dean should have girlfriends in the future because that allows some new insight into their personalities, but right now that would be strange and wouldn't blend with the everything that's going on and would even get in the way of things. I believe fandom hates Jo because she was introduced as Dean's love interest. I don't think the character is really the problem. I guess that would have happened to whatever character they had put in there to be Dean's girlfriend.
Well, that's a few of the reasons why I love this show so much. I have many more, but don't know how to put them into words right now. I just hope I made sense and made myself clear up there.
Now a few of my favorite scenes. No comments to the images because I'm tired and my brains stopped functioning. All caps Supernatural.tv.
