'Vampire Academy' brings up a 'brassy' heroine

Brian Truitt, USA TODAY

Zoey Deutch plays the half-vamp, half-human Rose in the adaptation of Richelle Mead's young-adult novel.

Vampire Academy director Mark Waters sums up his half-human, half-vamp heroine Rose with one word: moxie.

"She's got a lot of personality, and that fun, brassy energy is what makes Rose interesting," the filmmaker (Mean Girls) says of the character played by Zoey Deutch in the movie, adapted from the first book of Richelle Mead's young-adult series by Waters' brother Daniel (Heathers).

Teen girl writes and directs a vampire flick

By Whitney Matheson, USA TODAY

Several years ago I wrote about Emily Hagins, a filmmaker who made a full-length zombie feature ... when she was just 12 years old. Hagins' project was the subject of an acclaimed documentary, Zombie Girl: The Movie, that rocked several film festivals in 2009.

Now 19, Hagins is still pursuing a film career, and she has just finished another flick called My Sucky Teen Romance. The movie follows a group of friends at a local sci-fi convention who encounter a band of thirsty (but kinda cute) vampires.

Here's the trailer (and I love the song):

The Vampire Who Came Out in the Afternoon

By TERRENCE RAFFERTY

IT was “Satan’s favorite TV show,” according to a religious tract of the time. Tim Burton, 8 years old when the Gothic daytime soap opera “Dark Shadows” came into the world and not quite 13 when it breathed its last, was clearly untroubled that his viewing preferences were similar to those of the Prince of Darkness.

“I should probably have been doing homework or playing sports after school instead of watching ‘Dark Shadows,’ ” he said. “But seeing that show every afternoon, at home, in Burbank, it just doesn’t get much weirder than that.” And for Mr. Burton, the director of “Edward Scissorhands,” “Sleepy Hollow,” and now a splashy silver-screen “Dark Shadows” (opening Friday), “weird” is a term of the very highest praise.

Johnny Depp's true 'Dark Shadows' vampire revealed! -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK

by Anthony Breznican

Behold the real visage of Johnny Depp’s vampire from Dark Shadows!

Last week, long-range paparazzi shots of the actor wearing ghostly white makeup, large sunglasses and a pulled down fedora made fans of the original 1966-71 supernatural soap opera bristle nervously, with complaints he looked simply too strange.

title or description

Nevermind that he’s playing a 200-year-old vampire, which is strange enough.

Grow a pair (of fangs): Thank goodness for horrible, disgusting, merciless vampires

by Anthony Breznican

Can we please put a stake through the heart of the thoughtful, sensitive vampire?

You know, the kind that just needs the love of a nice girl to keep his deathly cold body warm through night? The poetry-reading kind. The sparkly kind.

This is why I am grateful for the whacked-out, Friday-night-at-the-summertime-drive-in vibe of this weekend’s Fright Night remake, which takes the vampire out of the gothic, mist-shrouded castle and plunks him into the middle of suburban life — but unlike Twilight or The Vampire Diaries, or (most recently, unfortunately) True Blood — Colin Farrell’s bloodsucker isn’t here to be a prom date.

'Fright Night': Don't ever cross Colin Farrell -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

by Jeff Labrecque

Normally, the phrase “Catch you later,” simply means, “See you soon.” But when it’s said by Jerry, the hunky neighborhood vampire played by Colin Farrell in Fright Night, it literally means, “I will catch you… later.”

In an exclusive sneak peek at the remake of the 1985 cult horror-comedy, Charlie (Anton Yelchin) challenges his blood-thirsty neighbor after a harrowing car-chase. Jerry isn’t pretending anymore — his fangs are out, his pupils are black — but Charlie, who’s clearly done his homework, wields a mighty big cross. “Not the cross, Charlie!” hisses Farrell.

Watch their fiery confrontation .

Much like the original, this updated Fright Night, which opens this Friday in 3-D, feels like the vampire movie the boys have been waiting for. No epic romance, no self-loathing blood-suckers. Just pure predatory evil wrapped in dark humor. Of course, the ladies will be captivated, too -- by either Yelchin's earnest goodness, or more likely, Farrell's bite.

Vampire character Dahlia 'plays' nice in 'Dying for Daylight'

By Mike Snider, USA TODAY

Sookie Stackhouse may command the spotlight on the hit HBO series True Blood, but a lesser character among best-selling author Charlaine Harris' supernatural brood is set to star in a new computer game.

Dahlia Lynley-Chivers, a vampire who appeared in several of Harris' short stories, is the protagonist in Dying for Daylight, a new downloadable PC game (out Friday, $19.95 individually or $6.95-$9.95 depending on subscription, iplay.com). It's the latest interactive game based on works by authors including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Agatha Christie, James Patterson and Nora Roberts, created for downloadable game site I-play.

Despite the swarm of vampires infesting the Twilight books and films and TV series such as True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, a true video game spinoff is yet to emerge.

Richelle Mead's new series 'Bloodlines' cover reveal -- EXCLUSIVE

by Keith Staskiewicz

Richelle Mead has graduated from Vampire Academy, her popular YA series that wrapped up in December with the release of its sixth and final book, and now she’s moving onto new territory. Well, somewhat new: Bloodlines will be a spin-off of VA, moving the previously tertiary character Sydney, a human alchemist, from the sidelines to the forefront. It will also be set in a sunny Californian high school instead of that rigid, preppy-bloodsucker academy, which I imagine will be like transferring from the Undead Poets Society to Bayside High. Check out the finalized cover for the first book of the series—that’s Sydney with the filigreed face, by the way—and watch a video after the jump of Mead talking about how it will differ from Vampire Academy. Bloodlines is set to hit shelves on August 23.

Ingrid Pitt: An appreciation of the late 'Queen of Horror'

by Clark Collis

My first real introduction to the horror film came courtesy of the British film company Hammer, whose gory, gothic output was a late-night TV staple when I was growing up in the U.K during the ’70s. However, there was much more to Hammer movies than death. There was also, frequently, sex. And no Hammer actress was sexier than the Polish-born Ingrid Pitt, the star of 1970′s The Vampire Lovers and the following year’s Countess Dracula, who sadly died Tuesday at the age of 73.

ComingSoon says Warner Brothers is re-making BtVS without Joss. "Atlas Entertainment announced today it is rebooting the beloved franchise, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with Warner Bros. Pictures. Atlas' Charles Roven and Steve Alexander will produce the feature film alongside Doug Davison and Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment (The Ring, How to Train Your Dragon, The Departed). Whit Anderson is writing the script...Whit approached us with an exciting idea about how to update Buffy," said Roven. "There is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character's return to the big screen. We're thrilled to team up with Doug and Roy on a re-imagining of Buffy and the world she inhabits. Details of the film are being kept under wraps, but I can say while this is not your high school Buffy, she'll be just as witty, tough, and sexy as we all remember her to be."

Here's an article on the writer.

Review: Coming-of-age vampire movie has real bite

TOM LONG
Detroit News Film Critic

Just when you thought bloodsuckers had been sucked dry of any potential, along comes "Let Me In."

True, the film is a meticulous and tone-perfect remake of the Danish vampire hit "Let the Right One In," so it's not exactly new. But it should open the story up to a much wider audience.

What works so well here is the juxtaposition of youthful innocence and downright puppy love with monstrosity and murder. Mean kids are scary. Kids who drink blood are scarier.

Video: Guillermo del Toro shares his vampire knowledge

When he's not making stunning, Academy Award-winning films, writer/director Guillermo del Toro has been spending his time co-authoring spellbinding novels. His latest, The Fall, is the second installment in The Strain Trilogy, a bloody vampire epic. Writer Chuck Hogan works with him on the project.

Publisher William Morrow just posted a video with del Toro that I think is pretty interesting: In it, he talks a little about The Fall but names a bunch of his favorite pieces of vampire literature. He shows several illustrations and explains how he took his favorite parts of vamp lore -- "for example, Eastern European vampires have a stinger on their tongue" -- and inserted them in The Strain Trilogy. This guy knows his stuff.

'Let Me In' is stylish remake of Swedish vampire tale

BY ROGER MOORE
ORLANDO SENTINEL

There are monsters who wander the halls of our schools, selecting victims, destroying lives.

We call them bullies. And they're the real beasts of Matt Reeves' "Let Me In," his bloody remake of "Let the Right One In," the Swedish tween vampire hit from 2008. Sure, the film's star bloodsucker unleashes some horrors, but they're not as immediate as the no-holds-barred brutality inflicted on poor Owen (Kodi Smit-McPhee) by a gang of tormenting middle schoolers.
