Timeline: the first day of an April in which Dean and Sam are on the road hunting supernatural evil, and their dad is still missing.
It’s been said that in the old days, the first of April used to be New Year’s. When a new calendar was adopted, New Year’s was moved to January 1st. There are many theories on why jokes are played on April 1st, one of which is that the news sometimes took so long to get to remote locations, and so it was possible little villages were unaware of this change, and still celebrated the new year at the start of April. Which looked pretty foolish.
A slightly similar theory was that those who could still be tricked into believing the first of April was still the new year were called April fools, and peasants would call on their neighbors and confuse them into thinking it was a New Year’s day visit. It is believed that from these early pranks, this is where April Fool’s jokes and tricks come from.
Time can sometimes play cruel jokes on people, as Dean and Sam Winchester found out the morning April started. That morning started out slightly different than the last morning in March. The morning of that first day in April, cold air seeped into the Winchesters’ motel room, enveloping them in its cool embrace. It woke them to start their day.
This morning started with a phone call.
