Okay. Not reposting since this is still at the top of the page, but I'm completely redoing this, because so much has changed after spending a measly HOUR watching the Abandoned Pile:

<== Taken from the abandoned pile, even though I have a buggy connection and I actually didn't click it for almost a full ten seconds after refreshing, 'cause it looked like a white egg, being on the bottom of the screen and therefore having distorted color (LCD screens, ugh).  I'm the type who doesn't want to collect hordes of the same sprite, so as soon as I have one male and one female, I'll give every silver egg I manage to breed away. I might keep one every now and then so I'll be able to breed more often, though.

The silver egg and the alt black were both rescued from the AP, both times after I was an idiot and didn't click immediately after the page loaded. (I swear, I always get interrupted when something rare pops up). Neither are inbred. As to the silver... once I have a male and female (love both sprites!), I'll be giving away eggs. I always got pissed every time I saw someone who hoarded a ton of silvers... and I don't want to become that person. n_~ I'll spread the love. I may keep one or two so I can breed more often, though.

I won't create any inbred dragons (except this sun egg. I realized that three of the dragons I have were inbred WAAAAAY down the line), but I don't mind rescuing them. But I know other people DO mind, so I won't breed the silver with them. All my inbreds are MALE, though. So if it's male, I can breed it with any of my females.

So.  The Abandoned Pile is a great place to find rare things, especially when it's fairly empty (meaning, don't try to find anything rare when it's so full it's blocking the entrance.  Keep an eye on it once it's unclogged and everyone's stalking the entrance in the hopes of snagging a Cave-Born rare egg).  I saw a gold egg an hour before this silver, and I saw a gold egg and two *different* gold hatchlings on the same day a week ago.  But I was scroll-locked, then.  n_~   And I have a laggy connection, so don't give up hope.
