Video: Guillermo del Toro shares his vampire knowledge

When he's not making stunning, Academy Award-winning films, writer/director Guillermo del Toro has been spending his time co-authoring spellbinding novels. His latest, The Fall, is the second installment in The Strain Trilogy, a bloody vampire epic. Writer Chuck Hogan works with him on the project.

Publisher William Morrow just posted a video with del Toro that I think is pretty interesting: In it, he talks a little about The Fall but names a bunch of his favorite pieces of vampire literature. He shows several illustrations and explains how he took his favorite parts of vamp lore -- "for example, Eastern European vampires have a stinger on their tongue" -- and inserted them in The Strain Trilogy. This guy knows his stuff.

Review: Coming-of-age vampire movie has real bite

Just when you thought bloodsuckers had been sucked dry of any potential, along comes "Let Me In."

True, the film is a meticulous and tone-perfect remake of the Danish vampire hit "Let the Right One In," so it's not exactly new. But it should open the story up to a much wider audience.

What works so well here is the juxtaposition of youthful innocence and downright puppy love with monstrosity and murder. Mean kids are scary. Kids who drink blood are scarier.
