The Story:
The weeks that followed were the happiest weeks of my life. Donal moved permanently into my bedroom and we made passionate love every night. We didn’t announce this move to anyone, but I am sure everyone noticed. The children started calling Donal ‘Daddy’. Nora giggled whenever she saw Donal kiss me. Orlando raised one eye-brow at us, shook his head, sighed and went back to his reading.
Thus the weeks passed by. Almost when spring was changing into summer, the news arrived that the road through the North Lag Pass was finally free of ice and snow and would be safe for travelers to use once again. There was a rush of people to leave town, who wanted to finally complete their journey. There also came more travelers from out of town, who had planned their journeys better. Although the town had fewer residents now, it was still bustling with people coming and going. I had no desire to leave. Rawn-Devu no longer called to me, even though I still had duties and obligations to the Queen. I don’t know if everyone was waiting for me to say something about leaving, but I refused to do so. Consequently, no one else said anything and no plans were made.
On the first day of summer, Donal went off to his usual lesson with his mentor. Orlando had gone days ago on one of his “errands” to who knows where. Nora mentioned to me that Riverford was having a summer solstice festival. She described all the activities that were being planned and asked if she could have the day off so she could take her children. Thinking about it, it sounded like something that my children would like also, so I asked if we could join her at the festival.
“Why, of course! That will be just the thing for you! You have been looking kind of peaked lately. Getting out of the house might do you a world of good.”
We got the children ready and put the babies in a large carriage. Even though we weren’t planning to stay all day, we would be gone too long to leave them alone. We then walked into town. We passed the studio where Donal was taking his lessons and told him where we were going. He smiled and said that he would join us when his session was over.
The town was a riot of color, merriment and frivolity. There were lots of entertainments to watch. Jugglers showing off their skill with balls, knives and fruits of various shapes and sizes. Bards telling tales and singing the latest love songs. Dancers dancing around poles with ribbons that gradually became tied into intricate knots. There were booths selling sweets and snacks and others selling wine and ale. Merchants came from all over with a wealth of goods to sell, from the simplest of cooking pots to bolts of cloth from faraway lands to farm animals being sold to farmers or butchers.
The children were enchanted. They clamored for sweets. They begged to pet the animals. They sat in rapt attention to a bard telling tales of heroes and adventures in far off lands. But all that standing and walking started to make me feel dizzy and I had to sit for a while to rest. Noticing my pallor, Nora suggested that we go home.
“No. The children are having too much fun. I don’t want to spoil their day. Would you be okay staying with the children? I think I would like to go home and lie down for a bit.”
Nora looked hesitant and somewhat worried. “You look like you are about to faint. I am not sure that you should go home alone.”
“No, really, Nora. I will be fine. Please don’t worry about me.”
“If you say so, madam." Nora said skeptically. "It is a good thing that the cottage isn’t that far away.”
“I am positive. I will be fine.”
I walked slowly home and rested often. I was very grateful when I arrived at our door. Just as I was about to walk in, I heard footsteps and a deep, angry voice saying, “Well, there is my slut-of-a-wife. Home at last.”
I turned around and saw Jaizel standing a few feet away.
I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t think that running away would end well. I could have entered the house and locked the door, but I knew that that was only a temporary solution. There was no one home who could help me. I sent a brief telepathic message to Orlando and hoped that he would be close enough to hear it. “Orlando! I need your help! Jaizel is here.” I quickly heard, “I AM ON MY WAY. HOLD ON!”
Jaizel approached me menacingly. He smiled at me. “Is this any way for a SLUT to greet her husband? Hmmm? Shouldn’t you be on your knees and begging for my forgiveness, you little SLUT? Or did you think that you could take a lover and I wouldn't hear about it?” He quickly grabbed me by the throat and squeezed, forcing me to my knees. “So why don’t you start begging? You have a lot to answer for!”
“I have done nothing that requires forgiveness.” I responded, as calmly as I could. “I will not beg you for anything.” I then felt the back of his hand hitting me across the face, which sent me flying to the ground.
“Okay. There where is my son, harlot?”
“I won’t tell you. He isn’t here.”
As I struggled to get up, he grabbed me by the hair and started hitting me over and over.
“Tell me where my son is, harlot!”
“Never!”
He rained more blows down on me with his fists and his boots..
“Insolent bitch! You seem to have forgotten all the lessons that I have taught you.” He straddled me, holding down me down so that I couldn’t move. “You were once such an obedient thing. It is a shame I am going to have to kill you. If you tell me now where my son is, I promise to make your death quick. But if you don’t, I will make your end agonizingly slow and cut you up so badly that no one will even guess you were once human.” Jaizel drew his knife and placed its tip on my throat.
“I will never tell you anything! I have done nothing I am ashamed of! But go ahead! Kill me! You will never find where I have hidden Reuel!”
“So be it…” He raised his knife and slashed my cheek. I shrieked in pain. “That is one. Where is my son?”
“I will never tell you!”
He raised his knife again and slashed my other cheek. I screamed again "That is two." Jaizel then tore open my dress and grabbed my left breast. As he raise his knife again, I heard the sound of running footsteps and so did Jaizel. It was Donal. Jaizel chortled. “I see your puppy dog is coming to your rescue, bitch!” He let me go and stood up. “I’ll finish with you later, after I kill your lover.”
“Orlando! Where are you? Help me, Orlando!!!! You are my only hope!!!”
“I HAVE BEEN UNEXPECTEDLY DETAINED. I WILL BE THERE AS SOON AS I CAN.”
“NO! You must come NOW!!!!”
Donal came within ten feet of us and, drawing his sword, assumed a fighting position called the long stance. Jaizel chuckled to himself. “So the puppy has had a few lessons. Let us see how well he learned.” Jaizel drew his sword and mimicked Donal. They circled each other, feinting and thrusting. Testing each other’s skills and weaknesses. Parry and guard. Thrust and ward. Around and around they went. Jaizel switched into the molinet attack. With his sword flying like a windmill, Jaizel then ran his sword through Donal’s heart. Donal’s face looked stunned and uncomprehending. He looked at me and said, “Patra, I…” as he fell to the ground, lifeless.
“Donal!!!! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!” I screamed and ran towards Donal. But Jaizel caught me by the arm and prevented me from going further.
“Not much of a swordsman.” he sneered.
All my hatred and anger welled up inside me. I felt possessed. My vision started going golden. Without knowing what I was doing it, I gathered up ever ounce of power that I possessed. I touched his chest with my hand, said “Mirti! [Die!] and sent all of that power shooting into his body. He screamed, convulsed, as if he had been hit with a bolt of lightning, and instantly flew backwards twenty yards away. He was dead before he hit the ground.
I staggered over to Donal’s body and fell to my knees. I gathered Donal up in my arms, rocking his lifeless body as I screamed and wailed. “Donal!!!! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!”

Date: 2009-04-21 12:04 am (UTC)The good thing about the community is that it has saved my sanity recently. I was working on the story and got distracted by my husband. I thought I had saved the document. When my husband finished distracting me and I went back to the computer, I opened my Word document only to discover it was completely blank. Sigh. If I hadn't started the community, I would have lost the entire story. As is, I went out of my mind for a few minutes. Fortunately, I was able to copy/paste the posted story back into the document. All I actually lost was about six pages of writing, which I was able to re-write.
I have since told my husband that he has to wait until I am finished before distracting me.
