The Story:

I awoke in a strange room. It was very austere. It had blank white walls with no decoration other than several large windows that brought in light to the room. I tried to move, but I found that I couldn’t. My arms and legs were held immobile by several very tight straps. I cried out involuntarily because of the pain the straps were causing me.

“Ah. You are awake.”

I turned towards the voice and saw a middle-aged nun sitting in the corner of the room. Her shaven head stood out in contrast to her plain white habit. She pulled a rope that was hanging next to her.

“Where am I?”

“You are in a private infirmary room of the Vyru monastery and convent.”

“Why am I here?”

“Because two days ago, you tried to take your own life by overdosing on sleeping tablets.”

“I did? I don’t remember that.”

“That happens occasionally. It is nothing to be concerned about.”

“The straps on my arms and legs are so tight that they are hurting me. Would you please take them off?”

“I am sorry, but I am not permitted to do so. If you need some water, I will get you some.”

“But why am I being restrained? They are hurting me so.”

“It is standard practice with suicide patients to make sure that they cannot harm themselves again.”

“But I promise you, I won’t do anything. Please? Could you at least loosen them a bit? They hurt so much.”

“I am sorry, but I am not permitted to do so.”

I started to cry. I felt so helpless and vulnerable.

There was a quick knock to the door and in walked Uncle Haral and a monk I had never seen before.

The nun looked surprised and exclaimed, “Archprelate Haral!” and immediately prostrated herself on the floor in front of him.

“You may rise, sister,” said Haral. “How is my niece doing?”

“She just woke up, Your Eminence.”

“Please, Uncle Haral, please? They have me strapped down so tightly I can hardly feel my hands and feet! It hurts so much! Please help me?”

“Doctor?” Haral said to the monk and gave him a stern look.

“Sister,” the monk said, “Help me remove the restraints.” They worked quickly to take them off and the welts that were left on me made it apparent that they were too tight.

“May I have some alone time with my niece?”

“Yes, Your Eminence.”

After they left, Uncle Haral brought the chair over to my bed. He sat down and took my hand in his. “I am sorry that it took so long to get back to you. I told you that it might take some time to accomplish. I was hoping that you had faith in me. I can see that your inner demons got the better of you.”

“I am sorry too, Uncle Haral,” I said, my voice quivering with emotion. “I really didn’t mean to take an overdose. All I wanted to do was stop those horrible visions that I was having. I thought if only I could sleep, they would go away. I wasn’t thinking very clearly then.”

“But, Patra dear, this isn’t the first time you have tried to kill yourself, is it?”

I didn’t want to answer him, but I could tell he was going to press me further if I didn’t, so I simply said, “No, it isn’t the first time.”

“Donal told me of the attempt in Riverford. How many other times have there been?”

“Two. The first time was a month after I married Jaizel and he beat me up so badly for the, I don’t really remember, twelfth or fifteenth time? The second time was after the fall of Elphston. Jaizel had sent for me and had me brought to his rooms, which overlooked the public square. He had ordered his men to erect one hundred six foot tall stakes in the square. Just before nightfall, one hundred of the captured rebels were impaled on the stakes. Their screams and agony were heard all night long. Jaizel had the windows left open, so that he could hear everything loud and clear. Because screams and agony always aroused him, he also spent that night raping me. I had nightmares for weeks afterwards.”

“How old were you then?”

“The first time? I was thirteen. The second time? I was sixteen.”

“This is why you are here, my dear. You need help. You need to find ways to help you cope with the difficulties of life without having to resort to self-destruction. The monks and nuns of this monastery are dedicated to helping those with your problems and with other kinds of mental illnesses. If you let them help you, I think that you will learn some very valuable coping techniques that will help keep you strong. I want you to think about it. I want you to want to get better and have a good life with your husband and children. Will you think about it, my dear?”

“Yes, Uncle Haral. I will.”

“Good girl! There has been one benefit of this. I have been able to get the complete sympathy of the Chief Justice of the High Court, because I was able to persuade him that your rape left you completely unhinged and that your attempt showed how much affected you were. He will be coming to see you now that you are awake. He needs to see you and your scars to document your innocence. I know that it won’t be an easy thing for you, but Donal and I will be with you. You don’t need to fret anymore. You will be okay.”

“Thank you, Uncle Haral. I appreciate all that you have done for me.”

“Now, are you ready for another visitor? Donal is in the waiting room and climbing the walls with worry for you. May I bring him in to see you?”

“Does he really want to see me? I have only brought him heartache and worry …”

“Young lady! That is the kind of thinking that is unacceptable. You and I both know how much he loves you. If you truly love someone, then you have to accept them as they are, flaws and all.”

“But I have so many flaws…”

Uncle Haral sighed. “No, you don’t. You may think you do, but that is because your late husband brainwashed you into thinking you do. That is another aspect that we need to help you overcome. I am going to get Donal now. Are you going to be okay being alone for a few minutes? Or shall I call the sister back in?”

“I will be all right. I promise to be good.”

Haral then left the room. I felt miserable and I began to weep.

Minutes later, Donal came bursting into the room. He sat on the bed and gathered me up into his arms and held me so tightly. He began to cry. In between his sobs, he kept saying, “Patra, oh my love, my life.”

When he was able to compose himself, he held me at arms length and looked at me fiercely, “Don’t you ever do this again! Do you hear me? You almost died. You actually had stopped breathing. I cannot bear the thought of living without you. Do you hear me, Patra? I cannot live without you! I will not live without you!

“I knew you were upset and anxious, but whenever I tried to get you to talk, you just shut down and shut me out. Do you know how much it hurt to watch you suffer so much? I just wish that some day you will trust me enough to share your feelings and problems with me, so that I can help you through them.”

“I am so sorry, Donal. I don’t want to keep hurting you. I don’t! I know that you won’t believe me when I tell you that I really didn’t mean to take all those sleeping tablets. I just wanted to stop seeing those horrible images that Jaizel put in my head. I just wanted to sleep dreamlessly. How was it that you found me?”

“Loysa came to get me. When I found you unconscious, I screamed for Orlando. By the time he got to your room, you had stopped breathing. Fortunately, he said a spell that helped you breathe again. He then put you in stasis until Fiorenzia arrived. She managed to magically remove most of the tablets from your body, but there had been enough that had been metabolized that kept you asleep for several days. She wasn’t able to remove those without harming you. Uncle Haral came an hour later and convinced me that you needed more help that I or the family could provide, which is why we brought you here.”

“I am sorry to have caused you so much trouble …”

“Patra! Patra! Patra! I love you! I will always love you! I vowed to love you in sickness and in health. I meant that! You now have to concentrate on getting better, both in body and in mind.”

“I will, Donal, I will try my hardest to get better.”

“That is all that I can ask.”

“How… how are the children?”

“Worried about you. Especially, little Reuel. He is taking this hard. I think that the poor, little guy thinks that he is responsible for your illness. We have been trying to reassure him that he isn’t.”

“And the rest of the children? Are they okay?”

“Sure. They are fine…”

“No, they aren’t. I can tell you are lying to me. Please tell me what has happened?”

“It is nothing. We are handling it. You don’t need any worries right now.”

“I cannot and will not stay here, if something is happening to one of my children!”

“It is nothing…”

“Donal! Stop lying to me! I need to know!”

Donal sighed. “Our sons have stopped feeding. They will not suckle with any wet nurse and they will not drink from any bottle. Both Orlando and Fiorenzia have tried working on them, but the boys are resisting magic.”
