I struggled. I fought. I tried my hardest to break free, but the soldier was too strong for me. I stopped struggling and tried to calm down, so that I could assess what was happening.
The man holding me felt me stop and whispered, “Good girl. The more you cooperate the less likely you will get hurt.”
I looked around for potential help. The two nursery maids were lying on the floor in a heap. It was hard to know if they were just unconscious or if they had been killed. The other soldier had lifted Yusaf up from his crib and was wrapping him in his blanket. Kosimar was growling at that soldier and nipping at him, but he was too small a dog to be affective. When the man got tired of Kosimar, he kicked him hard and the dog went flying across the room.
I tried to clear my thoughts and contact the nearest dragon for help, but my captor kept moving me and hurting me, so that I couldn’t concentrate properly.
When other man, who appeared to be the leader, had Yusaf bundled up properly, he nodded to my captor and he followed, dragging me along. We left by the secondary nursery door, into the corridor and down the hall to one of the empty bedrooms in the wing. The window in that room, which was open, appeared to be how they had entered the house. The leader placed Yusaf on the floor and then climbed out the window. He then reached back in, picked up Yusaf and took him outside. My captor dragged me to the window and I began to struggle with him again. I didn’t expect to free myself, but I didn’t want to help them either. It became clear to him that there would be no easy way to get us both through the window, especially with me fighting with him. The leader, looking impatient, leaned in again and they started to transfer me from one to the other and drag me through the window. For one brief second, the leader lost his grip over my mouth and I screamed as loudly as I could for as long as I could. When the man struggled to put a gag in my mouth, I bit his hand and, simultaneously, aimed my free arm and grabbed his crotch and squeezed and twisted whatever I got hold of. Surprised, he let go of me momentarily and I screamed again and kicked and flailed around, trying to make it difficult to grab hold of me. Within seconds, I heard shouts and the sounds of men running in our direction, not only from outside, but from inside as well. The leader had to think fast and made the decision to flee in the face of overwhelming odds. From inside the room, I heard the sounds of fighting. I quickly got up, grabbed Yusaf and fled in the direction of the guards.
It was all over in a matter of minutes. The leader who fled was caught by the guards as he reached the compound walls. He slit his own throat rather than be captured alive. The man trapped in the room was run threw during the fight and he died of his wounds within a few minutes. There had apparently been another accomplice, who fled the scene with the horses that he had been holding. He got away because everyone else was on foot, although Captain Quinton did send mounted guards after him, but he had too much of a lead for them to find him. Word of this incident was quickly sent to the captains of the city guards and the royal guards. It was requested that anyone of Rajfaharan ancestry be detained and questioned.
After having dispatched his opponent, Donal climbed through the window and ran to find me, his bloody sword still in his hand. It was only when I was safe in his arms that I allowed myself to succumb to hysterics.
By this time the men of the family arrived, armed and ready, only to find the action was over. Donal insisted that I needed to lie down to compose myself. Pahpey had taken charge of the clean up and the investigation as to how the men had managed to elude the guards in the first place. Donal carried me back to our bedroom, because my legs decided not to work any longer. Once he felt Yusaf and I were safely tucked into bed, did Donal go and check out how things were in the nursery. All of my children were safe in their cribs, but the two maids who had been on duty were both dead. They both had had their necks broken and they died instantly. Donal hadn’t wanted to tell me of this, but how could I not know? I was upset over their deaths for a long time. They had died to save my children. I made sure that Pahpey informed their families of how bravely they had died. He had Uncle Haral hold beautiful memorial services for them and he also set up a fund for the families, so that they would not suffer from the loss of the girls’ incomes as the families lived in very poor circumstances.
It was hours before I could find the solace that sleep offered. Donal had wanted to give me a sleeping draught, but I refused, not only because I was lactating, but also because I was pregnant. And I didn’t get to sleep for long anyway. When I did wake up, I found that Donal had given my maid, Mahli, strict instructions that I was not to be disturbed and that I was not to be allowed to get out of bed for any reason other than to use the privy. Yusaf’s crib was moved into my room. When I questioned Donal about my children, he said that they were fine and that they had been moved into different quarters, pending a total remodeling of this wing, per Pahpey’s orders. Apparently, until safer quarters were found for me, there would be a guard stationed at the door and at the windows at all times.
Because of these events, Donal and I had totally forgotten about the meeting we had called for. Uncle Haral arrived early, followed by Orlando, but I was not allowed to see them. Although I was tired and my body was incredibly bruised, I was starting to become irritated by being isolated and protected from things that I felt I probably should know about. I contacted Orlando telepathically and complained to him vociferously.
“CALM DOWN, LITTLE ONE! I AGREE WITH YOU. BUT THERE IS A LOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW. I AM WORKING ON DONAL TO LET ME SEE YOU. IF HE WON’T, WE WILL FIND A WAY AROUND HIM IF NECESSARY.”
It didn’t take long after that that everyone was assembled in Pahpey’s office. Donal came to fetch me. As he watched Mahli help me dress, he saw all the bruises that had shown up after the attempt. His face wavered in showing his concern for me and his anger over the circumstances. I wanted to walk into the meeting on my own two feet, but Donal insisted on carrying me. “Indulge me.” was all he said.
Pahpey started the meeting. “I am not sure why Donal and Patra called this meeting, but from what little Donal has said to me, it had nothing to do with the occurrence last night. Do the two of you wish to start with the reason for this meeting first?”
I shook my head ‘no’, and said, “If there is time and energy left after we discuss more important things first, we can discuss it today. Otherwise, we can and should postpone that discussion for another time and day.”
Pahpey looked philosophical and then asked, “Have the two of you been informed as to what happened last night?” He looked at his brother and at Orlando.
Orlando spoke first, “Somewhat. I gather that there was an attempt to abduct Patra and her son Yusaf. I am just not sure why yet.”
I responded to him by saying, “Although the men didn’t say anything to me, the fact that they were Rajfaharan soldiers and that they wanted me and Yusaf told me volumes. I am sure that they were sent out by the Shah or by his agents to take us back to Rajfahar. I am sure it has everything to do with the fact that Yusaf is his son and that the Shah has not been able to produce other male heirs with the women of his hareem. If he had, I am sure that he would have forgotten us long ago.”
The men all looked unhappy at the prospect of this. Not because this attempt, which had been thwarted, but because this foretold of more attempts in the future.
Pahpey said, “Captain Quinton and I have started thorough investigations as to why the guards failed to discover this attempt before it happened. There will many changes made and probably more personnel hired. This will never happen again. I promise you this, Patra.
“And speaking of more personnel, we are going to have to hire you more nursery maids, my dear. This was my sister’s forte. She knew how to hire people. I have asked my business manager to look into ways of hiring and screening potential maids. He will get back to me with his ideas and solutions in a few days. In the meantime we will just have to cope with what we have.
“Orlando, you said you had some news that you needed to share with us. Is it about this problem?”
“NO, PIATRUS, IT ISN’T. IT IS NEWS THAT I KNOW PATRA WILL FIND DISTRESSFUL, BUT IT IS SOMETHING THAT SHE NEEDS TO HEAR AND NOW. WHO KNOWS WHAT IT WILL LEAD TO SOON?
Orlando walked over to me, sat down next to me, taking my hand into his. “EARLY YESTERDAY MORNING, A GEORGIST FANATIC SNUCK INTO THE ROYAL PALACE IN RAWN-DEVU AND MURDERED YOUR COUSIN, LYNNARIA, ALONG WITH HER UNBORN CHILD.”
I felt the blood drain out of my face. All I could say was, “Oh, no! Oh, no! Poor Lynnaria! She was so young!” I burst into tears. I felt Donal take me into his arms and hold me as I sobbed uncontrollably.
Pahpey asked, “Has the assassin been caught?”
“YES,” replied Orlando, “HE KILLED HIMSELF IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS, AND SO NO ONE KNOWS IF HE WAS ALONE OR HAD CO-CONSPIRATORS.”
Uncle Haral, looking somber, asked, “Does this mean what I think it means?”
Pahpey looked mystified. “What are you thinking?”
“With Queen Lynnaria now dead, Patra is the next in line for the throne of Freedonia. Patra will now become the focus of all the Freedonian expatriates.”
