Piatrus looked at her sternly. “That is enough, Su Wei!” he reprimanded her, “You are my aisho; my concubine.”

“No, Master conDylar! The Emperor gave me to you to disgrace me and my family. He specifically said I was to remain a whore who slept with foreigners, the lowest of the low. To be untouchable to civilized men.”

“Be quiet! This is inappropriate to talk about in public!”

“Your pardon, please?” Su Wei bowed again deeply.

“Father!” exclaimed Ferrell. “How could you? She is just a child! She cannot be more than ten or twelve years old!”

“Please forgive me, honorable son of my master!” She cried. “I am an adult. I just turned twenty-five last month. I am not a child! I have been with Master conDylar for nine years now. He is a very good and demanding lover, despite his being yabanjin; an uncivilized barbarian. I do not think that men a fraction his age could be as vigorous or virile as he is!”

“Su Wei! I said that is enough!”

Su Wei looked embarrassed and stopped speaking. She kowtowed to him once more.

Piatrus looked exasperated. He seemed genuinely perplexed at her behavior. He then turned to everyone and said, “Well, let us not stand here forever. Let us go home now. I am in desperate need of a drink…”

So everyone headed to the carriages, while Captain Bayard oversaw the transfer of the luggage to the wagons. Everyone, that is, except Su Wei and her maids who remained prostrate on the pier. Piatrus looked mortified, closed his eyes and shook his head. He muttered under his breath, “I will never understand her. Why is she always doing this?”

Piatrus got back out to the carriage and walked back over to her. He said something to her in that same foreign language. She shook her head in refusal and said something vehemently in return. They argued back and forth for a few minutes. Piatrus ended this by leaning down and grabbing her upper arm and pulling her to her feet. He then took hold of her and tossed her over his shoulder and angrily walked back to the carriages. He yelled something to the maids who scrambled up, ran over to the carriages and climbed up next to the drivers. Piatrus roughly threw Su Wei onto the seat in the carriage and then climbed back in and sat down next to her. He refused to look at her or speak to her for the duration of the trip. Su Wei, on the other hand, sat there smiling and looking at the scenery as we passed by.

When we got to the compound Su Wei’s eyes opened in surprise. She seemed impressed with the size of the estate. Everyone got out of the carriages and quickly went to the banquet hall. Piatrus, Donal and I were the only ones who waited for Su Wei. The others pretty much ignored her. As we walked to the house, I asked Piatrus, “Which room should we give Su Wei? The south wing won’t be finished for another month or more. The north wing is almost full with all of my children. I can have Celianne move in with her sisters or have the boys all share a room. Otherwise, the only unused bedroom is the suite that is next to yours, where your late wife used to sleep. What would you like me to do?”

Piatrus didn’t answer for a while. He headed directly for the family room and the liquor cabinet. He poured himself a large drink and gulped it down in one breath. He poured himself another. He looked conflicted. Then he sighed and turned to me and said, “Give her the bedroom suite.” He took another drink, then took his glass and the bottle and walked out of the room.

Donal looked totally dumbfounded by his grandfather’s behavior. “Perhaps you should stay with your grandfather and make sure he doesn’t get too drunk and hurt himself?” I suggested. Donal nodded and left the room to find Piatrus.

I rang for Cora, the housekeeper and waited for her to arrive. When she came in, I gave her instructions for the opening and cleaning of Anya’s old suite. Cora estimated that it would take several hours before it would be ready for use.

After Cora left, I sat down next to Su Wei and introduced myself. I felt for her, being in a strange country only knowing one person.

“You are Patra? Are you one of Master conDylar’s concubines?”

I blinked at her in surprise. “No! Absolutely not! I am the wife of his grandson Donal.”

“Oh. I was just wondering. Master has been saying your name lately, when we have sex. It used to be someone named Anya, but now it is your name.”

I didn’t know how to respond to that, so I said nothing. After an awkward few minutes, I finally said, “You speak Common Tongue very well.”

“Thank you! I hired a tutor six years ago. I wanted to please Master conDylar. He knows how to speak like a civilized person. He is one of the few yabanjin who has tried to do so. Consequently, he has prospered because of this. The Emperor is very fond of him.”

“Please forgive me for being nosy, but you said earlier that the Emperor gave you to Piatrus? Are you a slave?”

“Oh no! I was born into a noble family. My father was the number one general for the Emperor. My family had a long and proud history of serving the Emperor. However, my father had ambitions. He made many alliances with other generals and tried to overthrow the Emperor. Unfortunately, the other generals betrayed him and he and our family were captured. My father and all of my brothers were publicly executed, so that the family name would not continue. My mother and my three married sisters were allowed to commit suicide rather than live with the shame and disgrace. Because I was still a shojo, a… virgin, the Emperor thought that Master conDylar would benefit from using a civilized woman: while at the same time, he was amused by the thought that I would be disgraced by sleeping with a yabanjin and by becoming fujunbutsu … unclean and uncivilized. Master did not know this at first. He was very surprised when no one would even recognize my existence. It was later that he found out that I was hinisuru … a … non-human; lower than the excrement workers or the lepers because I had been defiled by a yabanjin lover. Master conDylar was very upset when he found this out. He went away and I did not see him again for four years, although he continued to allow me to live in his house and he always sent money to pay for bills, clothing and food. I was very happy when he came back again and told me that he was moving me to his home here. I hope that I will have people to talk to here, even if they are barbarians. I was very lonely when Master was gone.”

“Is that why you came here? Or did you come here because Piatrus ordered you to?”

“Oh, no! I could have stayed in Shiangkau. But why? Master conDylar is an excellent lover. Very good, but exhausting. That is why I wish that you were his concubine, so that with the two of us, we could keep him better satisfied.”

Su Wei flummoxed me once more. I couldn’t say another word.

“Oh, I see,” she said. “You think that Master conDylar is too old to be a good lover? I can assure you that he is most virile and strong. He keeps his body in very good shape. He is not wrinkled or flabby at all. I enjoy his touch very much. He knows how to use a woman and make her scream with pleasure.”

I looked at her aghast. I couldn’t listen to her one more minute. I excused myself and started to leave the room.

“Oh, please forgive me?” she begged. “In Shiangkau, women always talked about their men so. I remember my mother talking to her friends about how wonderful my father was in bed, and they would talk just as frankly about their husbands and lovers. If I have offended you, please forgive me? I keep forgetting that this is not a civilized country and that women here probably do not share such things. Master conDylar is always telling me to be quiet when I do. I have not learned my lessons well. Please do not go? You seem to be very nice and have not looked down on me at all. Please?”

Su Wei looked at me so pitifully that I relented. There was an obvious difference in our cultures. It was going to take time before either of us could understand the other. “I will stay, because you have asked so nicely. But please no more talk about sex? I find it very disturbing and distressing.”

“All right. I will try not to. But if I forget, please tell me?”

“I will. Why do you always use the word ‘civilized’?”

“Because the Shiangkauese believe that they are the center of the world.” Piatrus answered as he stood in the doorway. “They feel that they are the most superior people around and that theirs is the best civilization ever. Anyone else, not matter how intelligent, intellectual and cultured they are, is inferior to them and therefore must be barbarian. Unfortunately, they have been teaching this to their children for centuries and it has become so ingrained that getting someone to treat a foreigner with respect is a difficult task. It has taken me decades to win the respect of the Emperor. If it weren’t for the silk, the spices and the pearls that can only be found there, I wouldn’t deal with them at all. Working on deals with them is a delicate balance of lies, flattery, bribes and a huge amount of political maneuvering. Dealing with them is like walking on continually shifting sand. Just when you think you have figured out how to do it, a wave comes along and changes everything. After fifty years of trying, I think I can anticipate when the waves arrive. I have learned to give them back as good as they give to me. Or I flatter myself that I have.”

Piatrus walked over to Su Wei, lifted her up off her chair and embraced and thoroughly kissed her. This obviously surprised her, but she quickly returned his kisses, passion for passion.. He then set her down, took her by the hand and lead her into the banquet hall.

I had the feeling that this kiss had been intended more for my benefit than anyone else’s. I sighed and followed them into the hall a few minutes later.
