The next day, Orlando returned, bringing along a young woman with him. She seemed to be in her mid-thirties, with long, straight black hair and bright blue eyes. She was of medium height and build, and had a merry face and a winning smile.

Tru and I met them at the front door as they came into the main house. “Lady Patra, Master Piatrus, this is Magister GyssafinConto. Gyssa, this is Lady Patra, the mother of the children I have told you about, and this is Piatrus, their grandfather.
“Gyssa has a very impressive record in training young adepts. Decades of experience. Some of the brightest magic users around have been under her tutelage.”

“Welcome, Gyssa! It is good to meet you. Although I have to say, that you don’t look old enough to have decades of experience,” I remarked.

“Thank you, Lady Patra. That is very kind of you. Looks can be deceiving. Although I don’t usually admit my true age publicly, I was 117 years old my last birthday.”

Both Tru and I were surprised and showed it. “Someday, you will have to tell me how you have managed this…” said Tru intrigued.

Gyssa smiled enigmatically. “It is a secret that I do not share.

“So, Lady Patra, why don’t you take me to your children? I would like to meet them and have them get comfortable with me quickly. I would like to be back home with them before nightfall.”

“I beg your pardon?” I asked confused. “My children live here with me and are going nowhere with anyone but me. I think we have a problem here. Orlando, I thought you were bringing a nanny or a tutor who will live here and train the children here. I did not consent to have my children go anywhere.”

“Yes, Patra. That is what I planned on doing also. But the Council of Magic Users, in their infinite wisdom, overruled me and informed me that this is not how they train young adepts. They have told me that training them at home doesn’t work: that the adepts need to be in an environment where they are under constant supervision and care. They told me that children learn and adapt better away from their parents. This is not much different from when a normal adept has been identified and sent to a special boarding school for magical training. I know that you have heard of this. But they would not let me seek alternative methods, no matter how hard I tried to explain things so them.”

“Yes, I understand a boarding school for when the child is almost grown or at least a teenager!” I exclaimed. “But my babies are not yet three years old! And Loysa is not yet five. I do not want this, nor did I give them my permission to take my children away from me! This is unacceptable!”

“Lady Patra, the Council has already made its decision,” said Gyssa, sternly. “Untrained and out-of-control adepts cannot be allowed to mingle with the non-magical until they have learned to control themselves and can be trusted not to harm anyone.”

“My children are not out of control!” I said indignantly. “They are good and obedient children. They have never once harmed anyone. I am willing to have someone come here and work with them under my supervision. But, and I cannot say this more emphatically, there is no way on ghod’s green earth will I allow my children to go with you or anyone else. I do not care what your Council says. They cannot and will not dictate to me how I raise or bring up my children. Do you hear me?”

“Yes, I hear you, ma’am, but this decision is no longer yours to make.” Gyssa began to speak in Old Tongue weaving a spell with her voice and her hands.

Within seconds, my crown was in my hands and then on my head. “Send this woman back to where she belongs. Protect my children from her and from the Council of Magic Users, now and forever.” I commanded my crown.

***Acceptance***

I felt enormous power building up inside me. I pointed my finger at the woman and, using a voice that I had never heard before, I started chanting in a language that I did not know; that felt ancient in it words and phrases. From my finger, a golden ray emerged and engulfed the magister. She screamed and stopped chanting. She tried to fight the spell that I sent, but she was soon overwhelmed. Within a minute, she disappeared. I continued to chant and point for several minutes after she had done. It took a lot of will power to stop, but I finally did.

“Patra! What have you done?” Orlando exclaimed.

“I … don’t … know.” I whispered. I had no energy to even speak.

Suddenly, with no warning pangs, I felt a huge amount of pain radiating from my abdomen. I doubled up in anguish and fell to my knees. “Don’t let me lose my baby.” I commanded my crown. “Let him live. Let my baby live.”

*** Acceptance***

I felt a different kind of power surge through me as the pain went away. I felt my baby move inside me as I succumbed to unconsciousness.

When I regained consciousness, I was once more in my bed. It was daytime, but I couldn’t tell exactly when it was. I lay there in total exhaustion. It took a large amount of energy to open my eyes. The only good thing that I felt was the butterfly movements of my baby within my womb. He was being very active. It comforted me knowing that I had not lost him; that he was still alive and well.

I was thirsty. I tried to ask for water, but all that I managed was a gravelly croak. I hear a nearby chair creak and Orlando came into view. He smiled at me. “Good. You are finally awake. “He made a movement, which I realized was him yanking on the bell pull, to summon my maids. Ellyn entered my room almost immediately. “Ellyn, please tell Fiorenzia and Piatrus that Patra has finally wakened?”

“Right away, sir!” Ellyn said. She gave a quick bob and then left again.

“Water” was the only word that I managed to croak out, but Orlando understood. He poured a glass of water from the nightstand carafe and helped me up so that could drink without choking or spilling it all over me. We were almost done, when the others came into the room.

Fiorenzia rushed immediately to my side and Orlando backed up a bit so that she could attend me closely. She looked at the men and said, “If you two do not mind, I need to examine Patra thoroughly. I am sure that she would like some privacy. Please? I will call you back, when I am finished. Ellyn, if you would stay to help? Thank you.”

When the men had gone, she and Ellyn pulled back the sheets and blankets. Ellyn then unbuttoned my nightgown, so that Fiorenzia could examine me without the encumbrance of clothing. She gave me a thorough pelvic exam. She lightly palpitated my abdomen. She put her hands over me and scanned my body with her healing powers as she hummed.

Fiorenzia finished her examination and Ellyn helped redress me and get me back under the covers. When I was modest once more, she asked, “Dear, do you want my diagnosis privately first? Or may the gentlemen join us so that I do not have to repeat myself?”

“Whichever you think best…” I replied. “How long have I been out this time?”

“Three days.”

Ellyn was sent to recall the men. They all stood around my bed as Fiorenzia gave her diagnosis.

“Physically, Patra is in good shape. No major problems other that almost being totally drained of her power. She is not totally drained, but she still is on the edge. Bed rest and complete inactivity will help her replace her lost energies. I found signs that she had been on the verge of a miscarriage, but somehow, that did not happen. You managed to avoid disaster again, Patra.”

“Again?” Orlando asked.

Fiorenzia told him about what I did for Suthi while he was gone.

Orlando looked philosophical. “Oh little one, what am I going to do with you?”

“Love me? Forgive me?” I replied anxiously.

“I do, little one. And, one day, I hope that you will listen to me and obey my commands. I am not just saying them to hear the sound of my voice, you know. I am giving them to you to help you and to keep you from harm.”

“I know, Orlando, I am trying.” I was too tired to cry, but tears fell down my cheeks on their own.

“Little one, I need to ask you this, and please answer me as best you can. Do you know what you did? Did you destroy Gyssa? Did you send her away? If so, where did you send her? Did you have anything to do with the disappearance of all the board members of the Council of Magic Users?”

“No. I don’t think that I destroyed Gyssa. Not intentionally anyway. Let me think about how I worded it. I asked the crown to send her back to where she belonged. The rest of the request was to protect my children from her and the Council. I never asked for anything else from the crown.”

Orlando sighed. “Your command was very imprecise. You gave a lot of latitude to your crown, because of this. You should have said where you wanted Gyssa to be sent and how the crown was to protect your children.”

“I am sorry, Orlando. That was the best I could think of. I was very frightened. I didn’t want that woman to lay hands on my children for even a second. Even though she looked nice on the outside, she wasn’t so nice inside. She would have harmed them. I am sure of it.”

“Were you thinking of any place in particular to send her?”

“Not really. Probably to her home, I am not positive about that.”

“She is not there. No one has seen her is three days. No one has see the Council board members in three days either. Even those magi with visionary talent have been unable to see them anywhere. I have said nothing about this to anyone but us. I don’t want to lose the use of their library just now. Think Patra! Their lives could be in peril.”

“I am trying, Orlando.” I lay back in my bed and closed my eyes, trying to gather what few powers that I had left. After a few minutes, I caught what I thought might have been a glimpse of Gyssa and many men I had never seen before.
“I think I see them, Orlando. They are together, Gyssa and many men. They are in a cave … no, a cavern. Somewhere in mountains. They are cold, but there is the sound of a river nearby, so they must have access to water. I can see them arguing, trying to use their powers to escape, but they are not succeeding.” But as just as quickly as the vision came, it went, and I could see no more. “I am sorry, Orlando. The vision is gone.”

“Thank you, Patra. You did amazingly well. I will put together a dragon search party. Who knows mountains and caverns better than we do. It is a start, anyway. At least we know that they are still alive.”
