Date: 2026-01-14 09:31 pm (UTC)so here's how i did it:
first, go to organize > Import Content - https://www.dreamwidth.org/tools/importer
then: make sure you're working in the DW you want to go to - i did my trystan830 journal first, and imported everything over from there.
click the Start import button [screen #1]; Check LJ button and log in with your LJ username and password.
screen #2: check all the boxes (I did my profile for my LJ and the first comm i imported. i also checked the icons for all the comms; and all the entries and comments) and then click continue.
For this comm, i created it first, and then imported all my other comms into this one. there's an option that for me says "Work as trystan830 instead of current trystan830" and you can pick your comm name from the drop-down that's there.
so when you import the comm, still log in as you, and then you'll use the comm name you want to import stuff to.
you'll be able to see the status of what it's importing (the list goes from the bottom up), and you can refresh it every so often to update it.
let me know if you need anything else - and hopefully it'll all work out for you. if you'd like, feel free to link me when you're done so i can give it a look-see. :D

Date: 2026-01-16 12:13 am (UTC)What do I need to know about creating a comm in DW to which I'll be importing the matching comm from LJ? (I am owner-maintainer of several LJ comms, yes, but not the original creator of any of them, so I don't know yet how to create comms. I "inherited" them from original creators.) Then, for "make sure you're working in the DW you want to go to" how do I make sure of that?
Thanking you in advance for your continuing help and your patience while I slog through these first-time experiences.

Date: 2026-01-16 01:42 am (UTC)to create a comm here, on any dreamwidth page - your inbox, the main page of dreamwidth.org, even your icons page - hover over the Create menu, and the last option is Create Community - https://www.dreamwidth.org/communities/new
pick your username for the dreamwidth url - so if i imported all my comms separately, i would have used geraint_fans for this one. then it'll ask you for the Community title - which was Geraint Wyn Davies Fans. it'll ask you how you want the membership - open, moderated, or by invite only, and then click the Create Community button.
once that's done, you can set up the import page, and import in your profile and icons from LJ. When i'm on the import page (https://www.dreamwidth.org/tools/importer), the "Work as" option is just above the Import Status information, and there should be a drop-down box between your user name here and the new comm name. select the comm name, and click the Switch button.
and you're quite welcome! feel free to ask all the questions you need!

Date: 2026-01-16 04:18 am (UTC)i am, i made tons of icons, and even had an icon LJ. i stopped making them when i slowed down posting on LJ, and then photobucket was rude.... but you can save this one if you want. my info on it over on LJ says the original pic was from still-flying.net, which a google search told me went off line in 2013.

Date: 2026-01-16 05:14 am (UTC)I love having a big icon collection. I have tons of them in both my LJ and my DW.
Rude photobucket was very rude. Did it lay waste to your icon LJ?

Date: 2026-01-16 06:12 am (UTC)i still have pretty much all my icons on at least one of my flash drives XD
i'm sure it did. my project during 2020 was to download all the pics from all of my photobucket accounts, and i think my plan was to try to delete the accounts? i don't think i could, i don't remember. but sometimes icons were there, and other times it was that annoying banner. i also stopped making icons when i got my first chromebook and couldn't get the web-based version of the GIMP to work the way the actual program did on my windows laptop.
