It was the SEX!

I'm not sure if this is true, but its kind of sketchy on Neal's part if it is.

If he signed on knowing what the role would entail, and then change his mind soon after . . . WTF NEAL!?

Not cool. :\

If it is true, which I suspect it is, this isn't a smart move on his part. This could hurt him.

Yeah, I agree. After sleeping on this and giving it more thought, I think ABC duped him and they're putting the blame on him. I do recall Neal and even Marc Cherry saying that Neal was upfront with him about his policy in interviews. So I highly doubt Neal wouldn't be upfront with the producers of Scoundrels. His policy is no secret and since he worked with ABC last year, they should have known.

He does need to put out a statement. This wouldn't be the first time networks screwed with actors.

I take news from Hollywood with a salt lick. Between the actors, the actors' different agents, the directors, the writers, the producers, and the whole thing runs on spinning the other person to get what you want? Who knows who was told what.

Comments were made around "Desperate Housewives" that they took his view on sex scenes into account and changed stuff. This show didn't want to, but we don't know what was flying around behind the scenes.

I'm just relieved my visions of a shanking won't happen. With his record of onscreen deaths, that was my first thought! LOL.

I expected as much and was kind of worried about this the minute he was cast. I love him but he's either going to have to make a compromise ( kissing but no nudity like fellow devout Catholic Jim Caviezel) or think about becoming a producer , forming his own production company so he has more control over his roles.

My only problem with him is how he can say it's his religion keeping him from doing romantic roles when taking the Lord's name in vain is considered a much deeper sin than playing a romantic role? I would think cursing and playing immoral men continually would way more on his mind than kissing a co-star every now & then. But that could also be me tired of seeing him die (seriously you could make a great drinking game on his movies. Down a glass every time he dies. Thank goodness he's hot.)

If his stance on no romance didn't hurt his career before it will now because this is the most public one yet. I respect his choice but I think he's in the wrong profession because Hollywood will only take it for so long. They prefer actors they have more control over and Neal has 3 kids now to support. Though Ruve may be the only woman in Hollywood who doesn't have worry about her husband pulling a Jesse James or Tiger Woods.

Either he thought he'd give it a go knowing Ruve would understand then changed his mind or, more likely, he thought they would change it... the question is did he simply assume they would change it (as the article suggests) OR was he sweet talked into thinking they would change it before he accepted the role, and then confronted with the truth once they started shooting?

I obviously don't have an answer to that.

But if it's any consolation, how many series are remade for another audience without turning to complete and utter crap? (Reality TV and game shows not included). I had misgivings about this project as soon as it was announced and at least now I don't have to worry about it from a Neal fan perspective. :P

OR was he sweet talked into thinking they would change it before he accepted the role, and then confronted with the truth once they started shooting?

I'm thinking this is the real reason. He's always been upfront about his beliefs, even before he has signed on to do a role. I'm really beginning to believe ABC duped him.

this was all over my google alerts today..... can that many places be in on an April Fool's joke?

This story first broke on Monday, but at that time, no one knew why he left.

I've been keeping my eye on the articles as they appear and the comments - he's getting a lot of support and new fans. :D

oooh cool!

[identity profile] willos-world.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It's probably my own fault for scouring blogs instead of doing my essay but I really wish conservative groups/individuals would stop hijacking what is essentially a personal decision for their own propaganda purposes. No I am not Catholic. Yes I am a "liberal". No that does not mean I am intolerant of people who stick to their own moral principles.

[identity profile] gatechic.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've noticed that too... *sighs*

But, I am glad to see the support he's getting.

One site even has a poll and there's overwhelming support for Neal.
