My review of Heart
Mar. 24th, 2007 01:08 pmOK so those of you who know me and Know what I write and what not probably were concerned about how I would take last nights ep. Those of you that are not aware of the fact that I’ve spent the past seven years of my life researching Werewolves (and reading about them most of my life) were probably worried about my reaction because I’m a Sammy girl.
Lets start with this I’ve been pretty much devouring folk tales since I was… well probably since before I was born. I love them. As a child I firmly believed I was a dog in a person costume. My mother STILL calls me “Puppy” sometimes. I’ve devoured more stories about people who change into wolves, dogs, coyotes or Foxes then I can remember. And I’m REALLY REALLY fussy about how these beings are shown.
That being said I loved this ep. I’ve been reading reviews of it and it seems like most people hated it. I’m wondering if that is “she can’t sleep with my guy” disease. Honestly, I’m glad Sam got some. I don’t think it was out of character for him to sleep with her. But then again we don’t really know Sam, we only know Sam after loosing Jess – I think we know Sam in a black pit of despair /anger and obsession. First season Sam isn’t second season Sam – he’s done some growing and changing (so has Dean). He’s also a 23 year old and it’s been awhile.
I like the choice made about how to show a werewolf. A little bit of background here: Werewolves (and I’m talking pre Hollywood) have been represented in a whole range of physical descriptions from totally human with the mind of a wolf to totally wolf with the mind of a human or totally wolf with the mind of a wolf. The choice made was a legitimate choice. I was disappointed with the choice to make her linked to the moon (this was a modern addition to the legends). I was sad by the choice of using silver bullets, pre Hollywood there were only 2 mentions of death by silver in werewolf legends- one was by bullet and one was a silver knife – I WAS gratified to see the knife in this ep (I think it may have been a shout out to anyone who had looked that deeply into the legends) a note on the original ledged of the silver bullet, it was from a communion chalice and it was re blessed after being shaped into a bullet. I can forgive Hollywood for being Hollywood.
I’m disappointed by fan reaction – but then again I think I’m watching the show differently (or for different reasons?) and I think I may have a very different education and upbringing then a lot of fans (not to mention I’m older). I’m not saying my reaction is better than anyone else’s but this ep’s been getting a lot of bashing that I don’t think it deserved. I honestly felt this was a well written and well played ep. I loved the last scene. And yes I do hope that Sam starts to understand what exactly he has asked of Dean. And no I didn’t cry.

Date: 2007-03-24 11:56 pm (UTC)Our boy Sam... well he (may have) killed this girl and he did kill Meg's body (I never really think of that as him killing someone. Like Maddy she was - er - no longer human without the demon she woudln't servive and same with er- removing the wolf from Maddy) and now this one. Not to mention Jess - the boy is right he kills his girlfreinds.
I was saying that season one Dean woudl have taken the gun and shot Maddy when Sam started to wibble - but thinking back, I'm not so sure anymore. After all he did make Sam do the excorsim on Meg.
Both of them grew up a bit in this ep.
Well silver isn't totlay a hollywood thing - like I said 2 times in the lit. both through the heart and once with a knife (well it was the old viking stand by of "pin them to the ground" thing)
I'm tired of hearing how bad this ep was. Just tired.

Date: 2007-03-25 02:59 pm (UTC)The thing about Meg is - the body may have only been going on Demon energy, but Meg (the inocent) was still in there. And, of course, there may have been hope that she had healed enough in the howevermany months that she would servive without the demon - from a writer's point of view I woudl have had Sam finish the excosisim becasue Jared has better Laten skills.
My Mother (a retired Minester) asked after first hearing Jared speek Laten "Ummm was he planing on becoming a preist before he decided to act?"
"No mom - I think he was gonna be an engenier, why."
"He's good with eclesaticical laten."
"It's all Greek to me mom"
It is true that both kills were mercy kills also both girls died while fully human and that may (or may not) be inportant from a theological standpoint- depending on how the SPN universe actuly works (something I doubt we will ever know)

Date: 2007-03-26 12:52 am (UTC)I'm giving up on reading reviews. People are too petty.
the "being fully human" was a point made when killing 'werewolves' during the middleages - so I wouldn't be suprised if it is also a thing in the SPN univers, bu tI doubt anyone will ever SAY it.
thanks for the complement. I've been interested in the supernatual forever and love werewolves and Black Dogs the most (I'm hopeing for a Black Dog ep someday if only because Sam seems to have a jones to hunt one)

Date: 2007-03-26 11:26 am (UTC)They alwasy bring up Black Dogs and Sam alwasy seems to get all excited when they talk about them - I have a soft spot for them cause I am the daughter of a minster so am (suposedly) imune to the effects of a Black Dog.
