Underworld Prequel Gets Green-Light, a third instalment of the Underworld series has been given the green-light, Variety reports.

Former Underworld and Underworld: Evolution special effects supervisor Patrick Tatopoulos will be taking the directorial chores on Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans, a prequel to the other two films. Set to star in the film is Rhona Mitra (The Number 23), as well as Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy, who will reprise their roles as sworn enemies Lucian and Viktor. While series creator Len Wiseman will return as a producer, the franchise's marquee star, Kate Beckinsale, is taking a pass on the prequel....

Danny McBride (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution) wrote the script, which follows the ancient blood feud between vampires (known as "Death Dealers") and their former werewolf slaves ("Lycans"). Lucian rises to power among the Lycans and challenges Viktor's cruel vampire empire.

"For the first time, we will experience the Underworld universe through the eyes of the Lycans," Wiseman told Variety. "Patrick has always played such an essential part in helping to create Underworld from the start ... So I feel it is both exciting and fitting that (he) now takes the helm."

Production is set for January in Auckland, New Zealand.
