The actress talks about her role as the waitress that can read minds and falls for a vampire

On HBO’s new vampire drama TRUE BLOOD, Anna Paquin is the lead character of Sookie Stackhouse. A young waitress with an interesting background. She can hear into people’s minds and what they are thinking and may or may not have some additional powers in her arsenal that have to do with something of the supernatural.
But TRUE BLOOD is as much a tale of vampires “coming out of the coffin” and into the real world as it is a love story between Sookie and her strange powers and a vampire named Bill, played by Stephen Moyer. ...
“There's an immediate fascination and attraction between Bill and Sookie if for no other reason than anyone else is terrified of him and she's just dying to go up and take his drink order,” says Paquin. “And we do get to see the roller coaster of that relationship because, obviously, as, I guess, the title of the book would suggest, having a vampire as a boyfriend isn't always the simplest of things to choose.”
How do you prepare for such a role? Dating vampires? They don’t teach that in acting 101, right? “I stopped dating vampires when I was 15. So I couldn't possibly remember,” Paquin admits.
There’s a number of things involved with the character of Sookie Stackhouse that took Paquin some time to get acquainted with … learning the accent for starters. “That involved a lot of listening to tapes of people talking from those areas, watching films with the appropriate -- appropriate voices and dialects,” says Paquin. “And it's amazing how much someone's voice is informed by the situation that they live in. And there is a kind of music to the Southern dialect that is very much -- from my outsider perspective, obviously, a product of that sort of very hot, very, sort of, laid back at times because of that sort of overwhelming heat sort of environment.”
And there has been a lot of criticism of her and other actors’ accents in the first few opening episodes of the show. But that was sort of something the crew expected given the rabid fanbase for the books that was likely to carry over into the television series. But for Paquin that’s not a bad thing at all.
“How is having people who are really excited about your show ever a bad thing?” Paquin says. “I mean, come on. That's what you hope that a show is going to have, and if they are already there, waiting to be really excited, then awesome.”
