Fans drink up HBO's 'True Blood'

True Blood is generating some true — and badly needed — success for HBO.
Alan Ball's vampire drama, adapted from the Sookie Stackhouse book series by Charlaine Harris, has steadily gained momentum on the pay-cable service. Viewership for Sunday premiere episodes, now at 2.7 million, has nearly doubled since the show's debut Sept. 7. All told, 6.8 million are watching each episode each week.

Seven of the Harris titles are on USA TODAY's 150 Best-Selling Books list. And though still far from the heights achieved by The Sopranos and Sex and the City, Blood has eclipsed a string of recent HBO failures, along with the once more-popular Entourage. Hey Twilight: Our Vampires Are Cooler Than Your Vampires

Everyone is going nuts over Twilight like it’s the second coming of Harry Potter, even though the producers have said their franchise is barely a fraction of the Boy Wizard’s story. Still, expect big things from the Stephanie Meyer novel adaptation this weekend, because this is definitely a fanbase that can’t be stopped.

I’ll admit I don’t have a deep knowledge of the franchise, but everything I’ve heard about the movie sounds pretty derivative. What’s worse is it sounds like a lot of it has been done before on film even better.( Read more... )

Nudity/Sex: Sexual references, kisses
Alcohol/Drugs: Adults drink beer
Violence/Scariness: Vampire violence, grisly images, characters injured and killed

It is in no way disrespectful to this movie to say that I enjoyed the audience reaction as much as I enjoyed what was on the screen. In a theater filled with fans who had patiently waited for over an hour, it was possible to hear some lines softly recited along with the characters, some squeals of joy at seeing favorite moments depicted, and, in a few quiet scenes, some happily sad sniffs. [snipped for relevance] Desperate Housewives is having a very strong season, thanks mostly to the work of Neal McDonough, Kyle McLaughlin, Marcia Cross, and Dana Delaney. I also liked that Lynette thinking Tom was having an affair was cleared up in one (very funny) scene. I was expecting a major character to die during last Sunday's fire but the slow build should pay off…

There's a scene midway through Twilight, the new 'tween vampire flick, in which the heroine, Bella, arrives at the vampire Edward's house—a bright, spare, Modernist home that seems stocked with Calphalon pans and furniture from Design Within Reach. She looks around wonderingly. "What did you expect?" he says. "Coffins and dungeons and moats?"
