The Story:

After the placenta was expelled and disposed of, I was given a thorough examination by both Aunt Suthi and Fiorenzia to make sure that there weren’t hidden places of bleeding or tearing that could cause problems in the future. Fortunately, none were found. So I was cleaned up and given a sponge bath by the assistants while everyone was watching the first baths and measuring of my babies. All the women were ‘oo’ing and ‘ah’ing and giggling over them. Donal was given the honor of cutting the umbilical cords. When each baby was weighed, it was discovered that each tipped the scale just over 9 pounds. They also gave Donal the privileges of giving me each one to hold and give his first suckle. There were tears of joy in his eyes as he watched his sons feed for the first time. When they had their fill, they were quickly diapered and bundled in blankets. Donal was given Vâlen to carry and Rosa took Gælen and they took the babies downstairs for presentation to the family for the first time, while I was given antiseptic creams and reducing lotions and then dressed into a clean, fresh nightgown. By the time I was ready, Donal and Rosa returned with the babies, who were taken into the nursery and put to bed in their new crib. Donal then carried me back to the bedroom and the ladies fussed over me for a few minutes, told me to rest and left the room to Donal and me.

Donal sat down on the chair next to the bed. He took my hand into his and held it close to his heart. “You are the most amazing woman in the world, Lady Patra conAgri. You are. I am so in love with you that my heart is overflowing with joy. You have given me everything that a man could desire and then some. You have given me your love and your heart, which I always carry with me and treasure. Now you have given me two of the most beautiful sons a man could want. I don’t know what I did to deserve you and your babies, but I will live the rest of my life showing you how much I love you and appreciate you. Thank you for this day.” He then leaned over me and gave me a huge kiss. However, before I could say anything, Rosa popped her head through the open door and chided Donal. “Give your wife a chance to rest before you start making more!” she exclaimed with mock severity. Donal blushed, got up and followed her out.

I was starting to doze off when Fiorenzia came quietly into the room. I greeted her sleepily.

“I am sorry to disturb you now, but I am going to take my leave. You are in good, capable hands right now and I am feeling awkward. This has been an amazing look into human reproduction that I have never had the opportunity to view before and only because Orlando was willing to change me into human form. You have given me much to reflect upon. Thank you.”

“No, thank YOU, Fiorenzia! Without you and your care, I and my babies wouldn’t even be alive right now. I truly appreciate you and thank you! I owe you everything!”

“Then we are both repaid well.”

“May I ask you for a stupid, tiny favor?”

“You may ask.”

“Would you come back in a month, please? I need to consult with you about something that sounds laughable right now.”

“All right, I will. May I know the subject of the consultation?”

I hesitated for a few seconds. “Contraception.”

Fiorenzia gave out a merry laugh. “You are right. It does sound funny, but it is a serious matter. I will return in a month with some ideas for you.

“And here is a present for you.” She put her hand over my abdomen and chanted a few words in Old Tongue. “I have just placed a reduction spell on your womb and belly. You should be back to almost normal size by the time I return in a month.”

“Thank you.”

She gave my hand a squeeze and left the room.

A few minutes later, there came a quiet knock on my door.

“Yes?” I half-heartedly called out.

“Oh.” The door opened and Pahpey came in the room. “I thought your maid would be with you and I wanted to find out how you were doing. I didn’t mean to disturb you.”

“You aren’t disturbing me, Pahpey!”

He walked over to the chair that Donal had been in and sat down. “How are you doing, my dear child?”

“I am fine. Tired and sore, but basically fine. Everyone took amazingly good care of me, Pahpey.”

“I am glad to hear of it. I have seen the twins. They are such beautiful babies. You make very beautiful babies, Patra, very beautiful indeed.”

“Thank you.”

“I have been trying to think of a way to thank you for making Donal such a happy man.”

“Just saying that is all that I need to hear.”

“That is just too simple, my dear child.”

“I am a simple woman, Pahpey.”

“Well I will think of something. You have made a huge difference to Donal and to this family in just the few months that you have been here. I have noticed this.”

“Thank you, Pahpey.”

“Well, you need your rest…” He took my hand and kissed it. He then got up and walked out of the room. I was amazed by what he said and did.

I was still thinking about his visit, when I noticed four little heads peering around my door. “You may come in, sweetlings!” Celianne, came carrying Jayzon, Melia and Melisant came with Loysa walking between them, followed by Reuel on his own.

They stood next to my bed. Celianne said, “The adults won’t talk to us. We are so worried about you, Mommy! Are you okay?”

“Yes, I am, sweetlings! I have just given you two new brothers to play with. I am kind of tired and sore, just like I was when Jayzon was born.”

“Oh …! Okay!” said Celianne. “We understand now. We were afraid that you were going to die.”

“No, dear, I am not dying. I am just tired.”

“We love you, Mommy!”

“I love you all, too! Now come and give me a big good night kiss and let me get some rest, okay?”

One by one, I was kissed by all of my children, even Jayzon, and they left the room as quietly as they came in.

Orlando came in next, very silently.

“INTERESTING CHOICE OF NAMES FOR YOUR EVEN MORE INTERESTING SONS. ‘FORCE’ AND ‘POWER’? IT IS A GOOD THING VERY FEW BEINGS SPEAK OLD TONGUE ANYMORE.” He chuckled.

“Then put it down as the exhausted ramblings of an overly fertile young woman.” Orlando chuckled some more.

“I AM REALLY JUST HERE TO SAY THAT I AM GOING BACK TO RAWN-DEVU RIGHT NOW. I HAVE FULLFILLED MY PROMISE TO YOU AND KEPT MYSELF IN THE READY IN CASE I MIGHT BE NEEDED. I AM HAPPY TO HAVE NOT BEEN NEEDED. THE BOOKS AND SCROLLS ARE WAITING TO BE STUDIED AND I MUST COMPLETE MY RESEARCH.”

“I understand. When will you return?”

“WHEN I HAVE FOUND SOME ANSWERS. OR WHEN YOU NEED ME. WHICHEVER COMES FIRST. I AM BUT A THOUGHT AWAY FROM YOU, YOU KNOW THAT!”

“I do, but I do miss your presence also.”

“AS I MISS YOURS ALSO.”

If anyone came through that door again, I was unaware of it because I finally fell asleep.
