The Story:

Everyone started to head towards the carriages. Rosa told me that Pahpey had arranged for a presentation feast at a nearby trattoria, where the food would be good and the wine flowing. This is probably why the mayor and councilmen were so interested in a simple presentation ceremony.

I pulled Donal aside and kissed him passionately. “You know this isn’t the time or place to start anything, love?” Donal murmured. I kissed him again.

“Thank you for what you just did. I don’t know why you didn’t tell me about it first, but I love you, and I thank you for this.”

“I didn’t tell you because I was afraid you might object out of loyalty. But it has been on my mind for some time now. I love your children and I think that they love me back. I want to be an influence in their lives. To show them what a father should be. I want to help you raise them and help them be the best people that they can be. I did it because I love you. And it is a way of expunging the name of that man from the face of this earth. Your children may look like him, but they will never pass his name on to future generations. I hope that he is rolling in his grave over this.”

“Thank you.”

“Come, love, they are all waiting for us.”

We went out to the waiting carriages, but as I looked over my children I noticed that Reuel wasn’t in the carriage. “Celi, do you know where Reuel is?”

“No Mommy. The last time I saw him he was looking for something in the bushes over there.” She pointed to some bushes at the corner of the city hall. I ran over to the bushes, but there was no Reuel. I started to call his name, checking behind nearby bushes. I saw a gardener and described Reuel and asked him if he had seen him. “Oh, yes, the little boy was looking for the stray cat that lives around here. I saw him walking over there.” The gardener pointed to a garden area further up the street. “Reuel!” I called his name. “It is time to go, sweetie! Reuel?” I ran to the garden. “Reuel?” “Where are you, Reuel?” I was starting to feel frantic. Reuel has wandered away before, but not so far away. How could he have gotten lost so fast? “Reuel?” I saw another gardener, raking leaves. I ran up to him, trying to act calmer than I was feeling. I described Reuel to him and asked him if he had seen him. “The little boy, maybe four years old? Dark hair and wearing yellow clothes? Yes, I saw him. Some men on horseback rode by and stopped to talk to him for a minute. They left with him about fifteen minutes ago, heading north.”

The horror of what he said hit me hard and I began to scream loudly and to sob and cry. My knees buckled and I fell onto them, screaming and crying. I was beside myself in grief. I heard the sounds of men running towards me, but I couldn’t stop screaming. Donal quickly knelt beside me and held me by my arms and asked, “Patra! What is the matter, love? What has happened?”

I managed to gather myself enough to sob out, “They’ve taken Reuel! They’ve taken Reuel!”

“Who took him? Lynnaria?”

I nodded yes. I pointed to the gardener. He blanched and said, “I haven’t touched her, I swear! She started screaming when I told her about these men who took this little boy with them, going north.”

Donal and the men started running northward up the street.

I was still sobbing when Loysa appeared next to me. “Mama? Want to find Ru?”

Not totally understanding what she said, I replied as calmly as I could to her, “Of course I want to find Ru!”

The next thing I knew, the world went golden and I found myself kneeling on the ground behind some tethered horses. I gathered what few wits I had and looked around. We were outside of Daihor, somewhere. There were five horses, and five men standing in front of them, looking at a map, their backs to me. I stood up and saw Reuel, gagged and tied onto the back of one of the saddles. I found a short sword attached to the saddle of the horse next to him. I quietly unsheathed it and started to cut the ropes that bound him. Reuel was limp, but still alive. With him in my arms, I squatted down again next to Loysa and whispered to her, “Please take us home, Loysa?”

“Okay Mama!” she said and the world went golden again. When it returned to normal we were in a different place. Someplace where I had never been before, that was for sure.

“Okay, Loysa, this is certainly away from the bad men, but we need to go home to Donal, right now.”

“I can’t, Mama! I’m too tired.”

“Can’t you try again, Loysa? Please? I really need Donal now.” I started crying again.

I could see Loysa really trying, but nothing happened. I thanked her for trying, but I didn’t want her to kill herself trying to teleport us elsewhere. “I’m tired now. I’m going nitenite now.”

“Of course, sweetie.” I said.

While the children were sleeping, I decided to look around to see where Loysa had taken us. What I found scared me even further.

We were on a butte. It was roughly wedge shaped, like a piece of pie or a flat iron. It was about 100 feet wide, where we were, and about three hundred feet long. With 150’ to 200’ shear drop walls and no way to get down unless you had wings. We were well and truly stuck. With Loysa’s inability to control where she took us, we could be anywhere in the world, or even any when. I was beginning to despair. I had no idea how long it would take for Loysa’s powers to return. A day? A month? A year? I didn’t know what to do. The more I thought, the more frightened I became. But I had to control myself. I was the adult. I had to think and find a way to summon help.

I cleared my mind and controlled my emotions. I sent thoughts and feelers out like tentacles going everywhere and in every direction, trying to find any living sentient being within range of my mind and my thoughts. And as my mind flowed and spread out, I felt something. Something powerful. Something ancient. Something that belonged. It wasn’t sentient, but it was there and it called to me, like a magnet calls iron. It asked me to come and find it. But where it was and what it was was beyond me. I couldn’t figure it out I needed Orlando to help me figure it out.
