When our ship docked in Garmay, the nearest port to Daihor, in Alfaria, there was a large welcoming party waiting for us. Piatrus, Suthi, Ferrell, Eoin, all of my children, Orlando, Fiorenzia and many more family members. As we disembarked from the ship, the atmosphere was happy and jubilant. There was a ton of hugs and kisses from everyone. As Uncle Haral has said many times, the conDylar family was very big on celebrations and turned any excuse into a party.
I was very nervous as to how I was going to introduce Yusaf to the family. I knew they would know of my shame by just looking at my baby. But Donal, being the wonderful man that he was, wouldn’t let me carry the baby off the ship. He carried him. Donal took the initiative with the introduction by saying, “Here is our latest son, Yusaf. I know everyone will welcome this child into the family.” He said it with such pride that no one could make any negative comments. I felt so grateful to him for sparing me so. When Pahpey took Yusaf from Donal and held him in his arms, Pahpey said to everyone, “You have given us another fine child to add to our clan, Patra. Thank you.” He then kissed Yusaf and handed him back to Donal. With his acceptance of Yusaf, no one could reject him or refuse to acknowledge him as a family member. I now owed Pahpey a huge debt for all that he had done for me.
The next difficult part was to introduce Laela to the family. I didn’t want to prejudice the family to her, so I was prepared to forgive and overlook her previous actions. Between myself, and Donal’s aunts, I felt that we might be able to turn her around and help her grow from a wayward child into a decent adult. But when I started to introduce her, she was nowhere to be found. Just as I was about to make a fuss and have everyone start looking for her, Uncle Haral stopped me. “It appears that she has run away. Let her go, Patra. It is for the best. She needs to learn some of life’s cruel lessons in reality. When she is ready to come back, she won’t have a hard time finding us. You have to leave her to her destiny, whatever that may be, which will be up to her and her actions.”
“I suppose you are correct, Uncle Haral,” I responded.
The last difficult part for me was to be reunited with Eryssa. My other children all knew and recognized me and all welcomed me back home. I planned to give each and every one of them a day of my undivided attention. I needed to catch up with them. But with Eryssa, I had no history with her other than the few seconds we had after I gave birth to her. She was now thirteen months old. I had been gone all that time, without being able to bond with her. I didn’t know how she was going to accept me, or even if she was going to accept me. I know that she had been raised well. Both Donal and Suthi had been her parents up until now. When I approached Suthi, Eryssa was in her arms. She was a beautiful baby, with Donal’s straw-colored hair and his green eyes. Although she still had her baby looks, she looked like the feminine version of her father. I loved her from the moment I saw her.
Suthi turned to Eryssa, “Ery, sweetheart, here is your mommy. She is the one I have been telling you about. Will you be a good girl and give your mommy a kiss?” But as I approached her, Eryssa hid her face in Suthi’s shoulder. It hurt, but I also knew that it would take time to win her love.
“It is okay, Aunt Suthi. I have not been here for her to know me. I don’t want to force her to do anything she doesn’t want to do yet.”
Pahpey rounded everyone up and we all got into the carriages to go home to the compound and continue the celebration. What little baggage we had was loaded into a wagon which followed us home.
When we arrived, the party picked up a notch and continued with a banquet and a lot of music and dancing. It was good for my soul to see such happiness and joy expressed publicly and freely.
Donal stayed by my side the entire evening. We were careful and remained sober. I tried to encourage to Donal to join in more with the festivities, but since I wasn’t up to dancing, he refused to dance with anyone but me. I let my children stay up past their bedtimes. They too stayed by my side for the entire party. I am sure that my absence had been felt by them. I hoped that my absence didn’t adversely affect them. I was going to try my hardest to be the mother they deserved. Being gone from their lives had to stop. I was determined on this.
When I started noticing that the children were tired and falling asleep, Donal and I gathered them up and took them to bed. However, before we left to do this, both Pahpey and Orlando requested that we meet them afterwards in one of the smaller sitting rooms. This way the party could still continue, but we could have private conversations without having to shout over the noise.
Donal and I had already made a game plan for this. The children were put to bed starting with the boys and going in reverse order of age. The reason for this was to have Eryssa watch how I interacted with the other children. We both knew that her acceptance wouldn’t happen over night, but we needed to start right away and keep at it consistently.
So it was that with Donal holding Eryssa, I put Vâlen and Gælen to bed. I gave and received lots of hugs and kisses and told them a bedtime story as they fell asleep. Next came Jayzon, then Loysa, then Reuel and his dog, followed by Melia and Melisant and, finally, Celianne. It took a lot of time, but I refused to rush this, for the children’s sake.
Donal and I then went back to the nursery and I nursed Yusaf, burped him and put him in his new crib. Eryssa was last. Donal started to put her to bed, but she seemed to be unhappy. Although he gave her all the hugs and kisses the others got, she started to fuss. When I walked over, I gave her a quick hug and kiss and told her a story. She seemed content then and went to sleep. It was almost as if she was envious of what the others got and wanted her share also. It helped me a lot, because I knew that eventually I would be her mother once more and her source of love and comfort.
When Donal and I finally entered the sitting room, we apologized for the delay. Everyone seemed to understand.
Orlando was the first to speak. “WHEN WE ARRIVED AT RAWN-DEVU AFTER LEAVING YOU IN UZJURIS, WE FIRST RESEARCHED WHERE THE COUNTRY CALLED TEVISKA WAS. IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS THE OLD NAME FOR VASHNAH AND THE MOUNTAIN RANGE THAT SEPARATES PRADAT AND VASHNAH IS STILL CALLED PAKAL, SO THAT MADE THE RESEARCH MUCH EASIER.
“THE HARD PART WAS FINDING ANY MENTION OF EITHER BLUE STONE OR GOLD-COLORED STONE THAT CAME FROM THIS MOUNTAIN RANGE. THERE WAS NOTHING, NOT EVEN THE REMOTEST MENTION OF SUCH IN THE MAGIC USERS LIBRARY. IT BECAME CLEAR THAT I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO PRADAT-VASHNAH AND CONTINUE MY RESEARCH THERE.
“ON THE DAY I PLANNED TO LEAVE, A VERY YOUNG STONE DRAGON, YOU MIGHT REMEMBER PATRA, APPROACHED ME.”
“Was it Fels?” I asked. “He is the most unusual stone dragon that I have ever met. But I think that it is because he is only half stone dragon. His father was a Gold dragon. He certainly was more lively and mobile than any stone dragon I know of.”
“YES, IT WAS FELS,” reaffirmed Orlando. “HE HAD BEEN HEARING RUMORS IN THE ROYAL DRAGON CAVES ABOUT WHAT I WAS RESEACHING AND HE WANTED TO HELP FIND THESE STONES FOR YOU. I TRIED TO TURN HIM DOWN, TELLING HIM THAT THERE WAS A TIME LIMIT AND THAT SPEED WAS OF THE ESSENCE. HE THEN SURPRISED ME AND SHOWED ME THAT HIS WINGS WERE NOT VESTIGIAL AND WERE MUCH LARGER THAT NORMAL FOR A STONE DRAGON. HE WAS ABLE TO FLY FARTHER THAN I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT POSSIBLE FOR HIS BREED. WHEN AGAIN I POINTED OUT THAT HE WOULD SLOW ME DOWN, HE THEN BEGGED ME TO HELP HIM MAGICALLY SO THAT HE COULD BE PART OF THIS ADVENTURE, AS HE CALLED THIS. I FOUND THAT I WAS ABLE TO INCREASE HIS WING SPAN SOMEWHAT WITH MY MAGIC, AND IT WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE INCLUDING HIM ACCEPTABLE. I FELT THAT WHAT SPEED HE LACKED IN FLYING WOULD BE MADE UP BY HIS ABILITY TO LOCATE AND IDENTIFY ROCK AND MINERAL SOURCES.
“SO HE AND I FLEW SOUTH TO PRADAT-VASHNAH. I FIRST CONSULTED WITH SEVERAL MAGIC USERS THERE AND THEY HELPED ME FIND GEOLOGICAL REPORTS FOR THE PAKAL MOUNTAINS THAT WERE KEPT IN THE ROYAL ARCHIVES.
“IN ONE OF THE REPORTS, THE GEOLOGIST WROTE OF FINDING A DEPOSIT OF BLUE STONE, WHICH HE THOUGHT WAS WORTHLESS. HIS DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA WAS JUST WHAT WE NEEDED TO FIND THE VEIN MENTIONED. IT TOOK FELS ONLY A COUPLE OF DAYS TO FIND THE LODE AND REMOVE SAMPLES. HE STAYED AT THE SITE TO CONTINUE MAPPING THE SIZE OF THE DEPOSIT AND FIND ANY OTHER VEINS THAT MIGHT BE THERE. I FLEW BACK TO RAWN-DEVU AND WORKED WITH A MAGIC USER WHO SPECIALIZED IN ANIMAL MAGIC. WE EXPERIMENTED WITH BREEDING VARIOUS ANIMALS WITH VARIOUS AMOUNTS OF THE STONE, UNTIL WE FIGURED OUT HOW LITTLE IS NEEDED TO BE AFFECTIVE. AND, YES, AS DEIVE SAID, IT DOES WORK.
“I RUSHED TO ALFARIA TO BRING THE SAMPLES I HAD WITH THE RESEARCH WE HAD DONE, BECAUSE I EXPECTED YOU ALL TO BE HOME FASTER THAN YOU WERE. THIS GAVE ME TIME TO BRING PIATRUS UP TO DATE.”
Pahpey then continued, “I have given the required amount of stone to a jeweler that I know and trust. I have also sent agents to Pradat-Vashnah to buy the mineral rights to the area where the stone is located and to procure the right to exploit whatever we find there. From what reports I have been sent, it is just a matter of time before we have a working contract with the Rajah.
“Fels has also found veins of the gold-colored stone. Between the two, once word gets out, we will be besieged with women trying to get either stone. Rather then trying to market this commercially, I would like to give these stones to the Temple and let them distribute them in whatever way they desire. This should help them have a regular source of income and not be dependent on any one person or group for their livelihood.”
Haral looked stunned. “Thank you, Brother! I am amazed at your generosity! This alone could make you so wealthy that your children’s grandchildren wouldn’t have to work for their livings.”
Piatrus looked amused. “Haral, I am already that wealthy. Yes this would make me even more so, but how much money does a man need? Besides, I am very much against leaving money to my progeny so that they become lazy and effete. I have it in my will that my fortune will go into a family trust and that anyone who wishes to access it has to work hard to do so. I want my family to understand the value of work, not the life of ease. Having the Temple financially independent will allow it to withstand the pressures that governments can bring on it. Don’t you agree, Haral?”
“Yes, I do, Piatrus. I just am boggled by the turn of this. Going from a need to protect a member of our family to financial independence for the Temple is something that I never expected. While I would never want to wish hurt for Patra for any reason, it seems that her curse has brought a blessing to the Temple also. This is such an unexpected consequence. I am sure that Varpa-Makštis will be tortured by the irony of all this. And I find it a fitting revenge against him for all the harm he did to Patra.”
Piatrus then turned to me, “Patra, dear, in just a few minutes, I will bring in my jeweler and he will fit a bracelet on you that will be tight enough not to fall off your wrist, but loose enough to allow you to wash your skin underneath it. It will be fastened to you in such a way that it cannot easily be taken off. It will look like a beautiful piece of jewelry, but it will house the stone so that you can reap the full benefits of its power. “
“Thank you all, for all that you have done for me. I am at a loss as to how I can repay you for all the time and effort that you have given to me. I feel so humble, so unworthy of you all…”
“Oh, pish-tosh, dear girl, “ Pahpey replied. “You have done a lot for this family. Let us have no more talk of unworthiness or repayment. This is how this family works. We help each other when one of us is in need or hurting.”
Pahpey brought in his jeweler who showed me the most beautiful bracelet that I had even seen. It wasn’t overly ornate or covered in lots of expensive gems. It was a simple design with a section of filigree work in the center. Underneath the center, the stone was housed. It would be in constant contact with my skin, but unknowing eyes would not know it was there. It has a very complicated clasp, which required two people to put the bracelet on or off. As I said previously, it was very beautiful. I would treasure wearing such a lovely piece of jewelry. And I could see the look in Donal’s eyes at the relief he felt in not having to constantly worry about having more babies.
Later that night, when we were finally alone together, Donal made sweet, slow love to me. He went slowly because he felt that I could have issues that might trigger bad memories; which did happen several times. But because of his care and his loving nature, we worked through those moments and he helped me banish them. He was amazingly patient, despite not having touched me in more than a year. We would have our passionate time later, when we were ready for it.
The interesting thing that happened during our love making was that I had a constant urge to take the bracelet off me, which meant that the stone was doing its job.
