The tea was bitingly sweet, the delicate pastries laid out in front of him far too tiny for his (at the moment) clumsy hands. Everything from the beautiful, if impractical, pure white of the lace covering the small circular table to the tinkling sounds of soft piano music in the background, was proving just how out of his element he really was.

He was used to guns and knives, fights and a beer at a local tavern, of collapsing into sleep only when the most exhausted. His world was dirt and blood, warfare and justice. Still, he took another small sip of the tea, taking extreme care not to crack the bone china cup he held in his hands.

“So,” the woman seated primly across from him began, “Young Mr. Cain, I suppose you know why I asked you here?”

Young? He had not considered himself a youth practically since he could walk and talk, it was a startling revelation to be reminded that Ozians did live around a hundred and fifty annuals, and he was nowhere near that. And yes, he did know why the Queen of the O.Z. herself asked him to tea, and it was not because of his sparkling wit and charm.

No, it was most likely because her daughter had forgotten to put up the usual silencing spell on her bedroom door the night before. They had been trying to be discreet. Something that was difficult enough without half the Royal Wing hearing her scream his name in the middle of the night. But perhaps, if somewhere there were swine as well as monkeys flying, she had not sent him a note to meet her at noon because one of her daughters had had her fingers buried in his hair and her thighs pressing against either side of his head.
Sure. And unicorns were going to be the new official steed of the Royal Guard.

“Uh…yes, Your Majesty.” He finally answered, realizing that staring at her stupidly was not going to help in the least. “I-I believe I do.”
She nodded once, taking a slow sip of her tea before she spoke again. “I just wanted to make sure that we will not have a repeat of last night’s events again.” Lavender eyes narrowed briefly at him in an intense stare, before she set down her cup and daintily picked up a small cream cheese sandwich and took a bite. “And that while you two failed to use a silencing spell last night, you are not forgetting to use the other sort of protection as well.” Chewing for a moment as his eyes bulged more than a little, she lifted one perfectly shaped brow. “I would prefer you marry her before you get her with child, if you do not mind.”

Well…hell. He did not know how to respond to that.
