Here's Sebastian as race-car driver Stevie Servine in "Fast Track," a TV series that aired for a season in 1997-1998. Sebastian's character is a born-again Christian, devoted to God, his wife (who serves as his boss and crew chief) and his car.

From what I've seen so far (about eight episodes), he does get some decent storylines, including a hilarious one where he and his wife are having trouble conceiving. The doctor tries to give them advice in plain language, but Stevie is embarrassed to death by the exchange.

Here's a funny moment: a track groupie, who is wearing a shirt with his picture on it, lures an innocent Stevie into her family's trailer where she takes off said shirt. Stevie yells, "You just put my shirt back on!"

I'm not sure why this show didn't catch on unless it's because racing wasn't as big then as it is now. The show's producers obviously went to a great deal of trouble and possibly expense to secure the rights to the names of some big advertisers, so I know this series wasn't made on the cheap. A few of the advertisers are fake, of course, but I saw decals from businesses that still support stock car racing.

I like the characters in this show, but I do have a few quibbles.

Track doctor and leading man Keith Carradine (Richard Beckett) is paired with the ambitious sister of the race track owner. "Mimi Chandler" is beautiful, smart and half Carradine's age. While he is an attractive man here, other than a fling I can't see why Mimi wants a long-term relationship with Becket. The two of them have very little chemistry together. I really wish they'd paired Beckett with someone a little older, just to make the relationship more interesting.

Track owner C.C. Chandler has an estranged wife, and she also looks to be about half his age. In a weird twist, she had a 5-year relationship with Beckett before she met Chandler. It makes me wonder if their affair started when she was still in high school.

The show tried to be fair with the actors, I think, giving characters as much air time as it could, but that meant some of those storylines were either too thin or too contrived. For example, Beckett's nurse is a young woman in love with a rebel driver. Trouble is, her daddy is the sheriff, and he hates the guy. So the sheriff spends a lot of his time making sure the rebel steers clear of his daughter. The sheriff's attitude smacks of something right out of the 1950s, and it's embarrassing to watch. I'm hoping that storyline ends soon.

Incidentally, 1997 was the start of a very busy period in Sebastian's career. According to IMDb, he did this series, two movies and a TV guest spot. In 1998 he did another movie and then jumped right into his role as Cade Foster on "First Wave."

i have a lot of these episodes on tape... but it's really interesting that i just haven't watched them... and i have no idea why.

and that's pretty cool about this start in Sebastian's career. i DID somewhere read that they were looking at Richard Grieco for Cade, if they'd made Eddie a younger character. hmm....
