Posting pics is pretty easy. All you have to do is use html tags, which there are tons of tutorials for floating around.

Briefly, if I wanted to post an icon I would use this code:

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/TheCricket/LJ%20icons/wyatt1.png">
Just replace the part inside the quotes with the location of each picture and you're all set. :)

Some people use fancy pants icon table generators too. (Like this one (http://lj.indisguise.org/icontablegenerator.php)). I've never used it before, but it looks pretty straightforward.

Just remember to post behind an LJ-cut:

<lj-cut text="cut text!"> Post content goes here. </lj-cut>
