vampire mythos

i was trying to think about something that ALL vampire mythos have in common.

*they have fangs (nope, Kindred vamps don't)
*they can't be in the sun (nope, Dracula and Mick can be)
*they sleep during the day (nope, a lot of vamps are awake during the day - most are just not out in the sun)
*they hate garlic (nope, my vamps love garlic on things, 'specially spaghetti)
*they abhor crosses (depends what the wielder believes in)
*they can't eat real food (nope, there are some vamps that can, they just don't get any sustinance from it)

*they drink blood. this was it, the one thing that i thought of that crosses all mythos.

what do you guys all think?

I would say that in general, they can all be terrible monsters if the Hunger gets out of control. Also, decapitation ALWAYS kills them - ALWAYS. What's the thing about silver? THat it's poison? Is that universal as well?

No forgetting Josef - in fact, it seems as though he likes to take risks with the sun mroe than Mick does... I think they're more LIKELY to sleep during the day than night because of the sun sensitivity. Another thing in vampire lore (mythos whatever) is that a stake to the heart kills them - in Moonlight it doesn't, just paralyzes them. :D

Sorry, you can stab the crap out of my vampire with a silver blade and it'll just piss him off.

His weakness is wood, a wooden blade will hurt him. (Kind of like Vampire: the Masquerade)

And if you saw "subspecies" The vampire there came back from Decapitation. I think that Lydia from Forever Knight (Lacroix's kid) came back from it too.

And I've found some vampires just turn into big wussies if they don't get enough blood. They just curl up and die.

Blood's not a universal thing either, unfortunately. "Children of the Night" by Mercadies Lackey had three types of vampires, blood (nice guy!), psi, and Soul. The X-files had a fat sucking vampire.

I think the only thing I can really see is that they all crave something to sustain them that normal people don't. Be it blood, energy, or sex.

yeah, there's a whole thing at my LJ itself about not needing the blood - but more the universal thing is they're parasites, and need to feed off of *something*

Lacroix's daughter was Divia. i didn't realise she was beheaded though....

That's what I got from what I'd read, that Lacroix had beheaded her, the devious little poisoner that she is...::gris::

well, i'm rewatching all of FK, started a few weeks ago, so i'll get there. Divia certainly was a bitch!

I should re-watch all of it too. Just for fun. I'm kind of stuck watching moonlight right now, because I can watch it at work.

My vampire has reffered to himself as a parasite when he gets all emo and whiny.

you're right about Divia - this was on the FK wiki entry... "Lucius was in love with a woman named Selene who had a young pre-teen daughter named Divia whom he embraced as his own daughter."

since it's on wiki take that as you will....but yes, Divia is Lacroix's vamp sire.

Really? Wussie vampires when they don't get enough blood? That'd be... interesting to see. Although i suppose not quite as compelling as the monsters we see.

in most mythos, stakes immobilise the vamps. i know the stakes kill 'em in Buffy - less bodies to clean up. ;)

i think vamps sleep during the day is cause they're nocturnal.

no, the stake is not universal for immobilizing them - it kills the Buffy vamps.

Knight Visions (or Vision, not sure which) has an INCREDIBLE header.... I mean, it's for their page of coure, but it's got... four or five FK characters on it, I would assume all vampires but I didn't think there were as many as they've got.
