Date: 2008-05-30 06:04 am (UTC)2. So, if I've never read a DW or TW novel, which would you recommend? I've recently stopped going to grad school and could use some light reading material. =)

Date: 2008-05-30 07:11 am (UTC)2. Well~ for Ninth Doctor novels, I'd recommend The Stealers of Dreams - it's seriously the best of the novels (DW or TW) that I've read; it's absolutely 100% fantastic; if you only get one book, that one's the one (it has Jack in it, too!). For Nine, The Monsters Inside isn't bad, either. For the Tenth Doctor, my absolute #1 favorite is The Feast of the Drowned - it's just... amazing. The Stone Rose is another favorite, especially if you 'ship Ten/Rose as a pairing (like I do :P). I've only just gotten my first Torchwood novel yesterday - I picked up Something in the Water, which is fairly Owen-centric (he's my favorite character) - and so far (about 75% of the way through) it's truly excellent, so if you like Jack and Owen and don't mind them taking center-stage, it's a good one to pick up.
Here's a little review I did of The Stealers of Dreams: This book starts off running, and it's just brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. The Doctor, Rose, and Jack are all written so well that I can almost hear them saying the dialogue - it's perfect. The characters are just perfect, and you just know it's them. It's exciting without being too fast-paced, and descriptive without venturing into the realm of purple prose. The plot is gripping and exciting, and you'll never guess the ending of things before you get there. It's a pretty incredible read. And if you can't tell, what I'm trying to say here is: Like Doctor Who? Like Nine? Like Jack? BUY THIS BOOK. You'll thank me.
And my review of Feast of the Drowned: This book's actually downright creepy. It starts out with a mystery and it delivers, full stop. Excellent adventure - fast-paced but not too much, with enough danger and intrigue that you'll really start worrying about the characters. This is easily the best of the novels with Ten that I've read thus far. The characterization is perfect, right down to Mickey and the ten-second cameo made by Jackie. The Doctor's perfect, and you get to see more of him than in some of the other books - a welcome relief after a couple of novels that whisked the Doctor away for chapters at a time! This is a great book, and a solid read. So what're you waiting for? READ IT!
